Ship Letter Rate, 1876 (June 26) entire letter incoming from London “p private steamer via Liverpool”, carried by the “Arbitrator”, franked at rare 3d. ship letter rate (1854-1881) by 3d. pl. 17 EB, marked “11/2”(d.) in red denoting Barbados half of equally shared charge, with Liverpool transit and Barbados July 14 arrival backstamps. The letter rate for mail to and from the British West Indies by non-contract vessel was held at 3d. per 1/2oz. from Apr. 1 1863 to Sept. 9 1881 when Barbados joined the U.P.U. Although this rate was only one quarter of the cost by contract steamer these carriers were seldom used. Photo. (Image1)

R.P.S. certificate (1970). Mail to the United States could not be fully prepaid until separate agreements were signed between the Post Offices of Barbados and the U.S.A. in the 1870s.
