Cowasji Dinshaw Adenwalla (1827-1900) was an important figure in the commercial development of Aden, In 1895 he had an entire floating dock shipped from Britain, known locally as "Dinshaw Pontoon". Although Zoroastrian by faith, and founder of Aden's Fire Temple, Dinshaw also financed the construction of a mosque for local Muslims. Sept. 3 arrival c.d.s., sent Aug. 2 from Ashfield addressed to missionary Rev. W. Miller somewhat stained and creased, this the only known example of the first datestamp used as arrival marking. Rev. William D. Miller (1838-1923) was unanimously elected as moderator of the General Assembly of the Free Church of Scotland, the highest honour accorded in the church in 1896 and was later Vice-Chancellor of the University of Madras. The card, with interesting message, is written and signed by noted fellow missionary, Rev. William W. Lindsay (1844-1900), Chairman of the Wesleyan Mission in Fiji. Also 1890 incoming stampless U.S. postcard addressed to Matthew Lochhead at Sheikh Othman with Aden "MY 20/90" type D22 receiving thimble c.d.s., showing Norristown, PA Apr. 28 despatch and "NY/T" New York due marking but apparently uncharged, most unusual.
