From The Brian Pottow Collection of Great Britain - Cherrystone Auctions - February 20, 2019

Lot 3589 - 1840 1p black V.R. Official, horizontal pair, lettered D-C, D-D, full original gum, h.r., ample to large margins all around, v.f. and extremely rare pair of V.R. Officials, with 1980 BPA certificate (SG V1 (VR1) œ90,000) (In May of 1840, a stamp, similar to the Penny Black but with the initials "VR" in the upper corners, was prepared for use as Official Stamps. There were 3,233 sheets printed and delivered. The idea of having separate postage stamps for government offices was however abandoned and these Official Stamps were never officially released. Of these unissued stamps, 3,302 sheets were destroyed in 1843. Some examples were sent out with postal notices, and a few of the stamps were given to Sir Rowland Hill for testing purposes.
