14 imagePortugal, 1821. Pre-philately. Secured Letter, sent from Lisbon on August 1, 1821, bound for Riga. As it traveled overland, via Spain, France, and Germany until reaching the Baltic, it was marked "CERTIFIED IN LISBON ON August 1, 1821." This legend, rather than the usual "secure" one applied to letters from the mainland, was intended to inform the Spanish postal service of the nature of the letter, using the expression "CERTIFIED" (as in Spanish). It passed through Spain on August 4, entering France via Bayonne, where it was CHARGED, and then continued via Prussia, where it was also CHARGED, to Riga. One of two known letters bearing the "Certified in Lisbon" mark. A very rare letter.(Image 1) (Image 2)
