Lot 398 - Issued Stamps. Perforated 14. One Pound. S.G. 166b, Error, Scarlet and reddish mauve, Long Gash printing. [1-2] corner pair from sheet 2 showing small part of imprint, [2] Long gash in Queen's ear, some hinge remnants in the margin, the two stamps sharing a single hinge mark; horizontal crease in the left-hand margin just extending into one stamp, [2] being fine. Fresh and an outstanding multiple of this lovely stamp. A monumental rarity with only one other Gash in Queen's ear item known from sh....Est. £28,000-30,000 Sold for GBP 24,000

Rhodesia 1910-13 Double Head Issue: The Cottonwood Collection - June 3, 2021

SPINK are delighted to announce the sale of The Cottonwood Collection, a magnificent holding of the Rhodesia Double Head Issue, to be sold on June 3rd 2021. Formed over decades by a master of the subject, Robert M. Gibbs, this important offering contains unique and exceptionally important items that will certainly crown even the finest of collections. Highlights:
  • Issued Stamps. Perforated 14. Seven Shillings and Sixpence. RSC "E", Scarlet and (deep bright) blue, Mid Gash printing. [18-24] block of four, variant, scarlet and (paler and brighter) chalky blue, outstanding rich colours and perfect centering, large part original gum with the lower pair remaining unmounted. A great rarity and a beautiful and outstanding multiple. (Lot 346)
  • Issued Stamps. Perforated 14. Halfpenny. Plate II, RJL 5, Dull blue-green group. A marginal pair, [39-40], from the right of the sheet, variety imperforate, lovely fresh colour and very lightly mounted with the stamps having nearly full original gum, two hinge remainders in margin. Exceptionally fine with none of the creasing that is normally associated with this rare variety. (Lot 8)
  • Issued Stamps. Perforated 14. Six Pence. Frame Plate I. RSC "C", Red-brown and deep rose-lilac with "coppery" heads, Hook printing. [43], exceptional colours and well-centered, lightly mounted mint with small hinge remainder. One of the great rarities of the Double Head issue, of which only six or seven mint examples have been recorded to date, not all of which are fine. Considered the finest of this exceptionally rare stamp. (Lot 142)
  • Issued Stamps. Perforated 14. One Pound. S.G. 166, Rose-scarlet and bluish black, Mid Gash printing. [16-22] marginal block of four, very lightly mounted mint, the left-hand vertical pair remaining unmounted. A very rare, superb and lovely multiple.(Lot 375)
