1 c   imageWhaling Ship "Pocahontas" at Tahihi, stampless folded letter, datelined "Pocahontas, Huahine, April 15, 1835", with interesting contents written by Captain Barnard, telling of sickness among the natives of the Society Islands, rated 14&1/2 in manuscript, handstamped SHIP in red and bearing red "New Beford Ms. Sep 22" c.d.s., addressed to Ichabod Goodwin at Portsmouth, very fine.The "Pocahontas," a whaling vessel out of Holmes Hole, Massachusetts, was famously rammed and nearly sunk by a whale in 1850 while on a voyage in the South Pacific. It was lost in 1857. IIchabod Goodwin, at the time of this letter a prominent Portsmouth merchant, would later become the 27th Governor of the State of New Hampshire. (Image)

President" final mail delivery, stampless cover, bearing "Paid L.S. 8 FE 8 1841" Maltese cross and "Paid Ship Letter London 8 FE 8 1841" datestamps, to Isaac Leeser, Minister of the Jewish Congregations, St James Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, via New York with red "New York Ship Mar 3" c.d.s., endorsed at lower left "Per President Steamer 10 Feb 1841," assessed double rate by the U.S. Post Office, with "27" manuscript in black indicating twice the 12&1/2c plus 2c ship letter fee, some faults to back, a few pieces missing from flap, a nice example from the penultimate voyage of the S.S. President.The S.S. President was a British passenger ship, the largest in the world at the time of her maiden voyage on August 1, 1840. In February, 1841, she sailed from Liverpool on her third westbound voyage, arriving in New York twenty one days later, when this cover was delivered. Just over a week later, passing the Nantucket Shoals on her return voyage, the S.S. President, and all 136 passengers and crew were lost in heavy seas. (Image)

Mar 18th 1851," to New Orleans, postmarked with red "New Orleans La Mar 22" c.d.s., filing fold through ship marking, not detracting from this desirable strike and nice illustration of postage-free mail regarding the shipment of cargo.Section 159 of the US Postal Laws and Regulations provided that "all letters conveyed by steamboats...relating to cargo must be left unsealed; and if sealed, must be delivered to the post office and charged with postage; but if upon opening by the postmaster, and found to relate to the cargo, the postage may be remitted. The law relating to this subject is often violated. Postmasters will use dilligence to correct the evil..." (Image)
