Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
62 OblL   image1845 60r black, types I and II, worn impression, an outstanding block of four on yellowish paper, featuring types I-I / II-II, just clear at one point at top, otherwise margins ranging from clear to large, cleanly cancelled by two strikes of ''Correio Da Bahia'' c.d.s., small faults including vertical crease, these imperfections not detracting from the attractive appearance and importance of this piece, A fantastic and remarkable multiple featuring an important and most unusual combination of se-tenant types, being the largest multiple known with a postal marking, of which only two such items are recorded, registered in the RHM catalogue as the most valuable used block of four of this issue after the similar block of the 600 r. denomination; 2010 Moorhouse certificate; RHM 6+6A; ex-Lima and Hubbard. (Image) Est. $20,000-30,000

63 O   image1845 90r black, type II, intermediate impression, a remarkable strip of five on greyish paper, just touched in places with generally wide spaces in margins, showing part of marginal rule at left thus originating from the left of the sheet, cancelled by ''Cidade/De/Nichteroy'' handstamps, faults including clipped corner at upper left and small hole in the fourth stamp, of little importance, impressive and fine for this issue, an important and unique multiple which is the largest in existence featuring only types II's; 2010 Moorhouse certificate; RHM 7; ex-Hubbard. (Image) Est. $4,000-5,000

SOLD for $3,500.00

64 O   image1845 90r black, type I, worn impression, strip of four on greyish paper, frame lines just touched in two places, generally wide margins, cancelled by framed ''Cidade de Nictheroy'' handstamp, small closed tear in margin in center at top, very fine, multiples of this 90r type I stamp are rare and desirable with this example being the second largest in existence, and unique as a strip; 2010 Moorhouse certificate; RHM 7A; ex-Hubbard. (Image) Est. $1,500-2,000

SOLD for $1,300.00

65 O   image1845 90r black, Types I and II, intermediate impression, a magnificent block of six on greyish paper, type II at top and type I in the lower block of four, thus positioning this multiple as originating from the base of the sheet, fresh impression, graced by balanced ample margins all round, cancelled by “Correio Geral Da Corte” datestamps of July 16, 1847, thin spot in central margin at top, of absolutely no significance. As stated in the following lot of this sale, the first plate used to print 90r values was made up of type I cliches in the lower two rows at base, with the remainder of the plate alternating types II & I in the vertical rows.An extremely rare multiple with its great importance endorsed by the fact that, to our knowledge, only three multiples, from the base of the sheet, but comprising of types II & I, are recorded; this key piece proves that one plate, comprised of vertically alternated types I & II, included two consecutive horizontal rows at base solely made up of type I electros; 2010 Moorhouse certificate; RHM 7+7A; ex-Benevides and Hubbard. (Image) Est. $15,000-20,000

SOLD for $12,000.00

66 O   image1845 90r black, types I and II, intermediate impression, an extraordinary block of fifteen on greyish paper, coming from the lower left corner of the sheet, type II in upper row and type I in other two rows, positions 103-107 / 120-124 / 137-141, one stamp slightly cut into at top, otherwise has predominantly very large to huge sheet margin at left, displaying marginal rules on two sides, cancelled by framed “Correo/De/Nictheroy” handstamps, two tiny surface scuffs on position 138 of no importance for this rarity. This piece, showing marginal rules on two sides, clearly demonstrates, as does the lot 1105 offered in this sale, that on one plate used to print this value the two bottom horizontal rows were composed solely of type I’s, instead of a combination of types I & II. On page 211 of Walter G. Taveira’s handbook on this issue, the author writes of a 90r marginal block of four, composed only of type I, which had been severed from a block of ten, saying: “Had the block been kept in its original size of ten units, it most likely would have been at least the second most valuable item of Brazilian philately”. Mr. Taveira, an advanced researcher of Brazilian philately -as demonstrated by his outstanding handbook-, was highlighting the desirability and great rarity of marginal multiples vertically repeating the type I. In regard to this item, the true significance and importance of this block lies in the arrangement of the types in the vertical row ( II-I-I ) with the block establishing beyond doubt that repeated rows of type I’s originate from the bottom two rows of the sheet, thus proving that one plate, comprised of vertically alternated types I & II, included two consecutive horizontal rows at base solely made up of type I electros. When this item was offered for the first time at public auction in the famous sale of a Brazilian collection on 18 March 1975, its immense importance was not highlighted since it was sold without reference to the types at the base differing from the normal arrangement. After more than three decades, the block was offered at auction with its importance fully recognised. Of the three multiples which are believed to exist featuring type II in combination with type I in the bottom two horizontal rows, this is the largest, a unique and major rarity of Brazilian philately. 2010 Moorhouse certificate; RHM 7+7A. ex-Studart and Hubbard. 67 pP   image1845 90r black, types I and II, intermediate impression, and 30r black, type II, worn impression, the 90r in very fine block of four, types I-I / II-II, large even margins on three sides and sheet margin at left, slight wrinkle at lower right, together with well margined 30r single, each tied to piece by ''Cidade De/Campos'' double oval handstamp, very fine, as far as we are aware, this is the only example of this combination franking extant, which was very probably applied on a judicial document weighing 52 ''oitavas'' and carried through the post; 2010 Moorhouse certificate; RHM 5, 7A+7; ex-Benevides and Hubbard. 68 c   image1845 90r black, types I and II, fine impression, vertical pair II / I graced by large margins all around, the upper adhesive showing two spectacular pre-printing paper folds, tied on arrival by "Correio Geral Da Corte" c.d.s. on reverse of folded cover carried by British packet, with corresponding endorsement on front, from Bahia -docket inside "Bahia 12 Dec 1845/Jezler & ca.", erroneously stating 1845 instead of 1844- to Rio de Janeiro, struck with British "Rio-Janeiro" double-arc datestamp on December 27 before entering the Brazilian mail system as, to this point, there was not involvement of the national post, an exhibition item demonstrating a very rare example of internal mail being forwarded through the British Post Office at Rio de Janeiro and involvement of British packet, probably the most significant of the just about ten covers recorded exhibiting two examples of this denomination, this being further enhanced by the rare usage and the very infrequent and visually impressive variety, a highly interesting piece for the advanced postal history collection; 2008 Moorhouse certificate; RHM 7+7A. Diamantina'' oval handstamps on judicial wrapper from Diamantina to Serro, 480 Réis franking paying the weight of 8.5 pounds as per Decree 254 of November 29, 1842 for a ''paper of legal proceedings'', believed to be a unique franking, representing the largest 90r franking recorded on a postal document featuring a postal marking, representing one of the most spectacular items of this issue; 2010 Moorhouse certificate; RHM 4, 7+7A; ex-Ferreira and Hubbard. 71 pP   image1845 90r black, type IIa, intermediate impression, and 30r black, type II, intermediate impression, a remarkable 90r block of six, 3x2, with predominantly large margins, just touched at top right of upper right adhesive, together with a block of four, just touched at left, otherwise large margins, in combination with 30r vertical pair, all tied to piece of judicial document dated March 18, 1856 by framed ''Cidade/De/Nichteroy'' handstamp in a brilliant orangish red color, very fine.Type IIa, sometimes known as type III, introduces one of the most fascinating mysteries in the "Inclinados" issue: the plating of the printings of the 90r value. Until 1973, all multiples, which only exhibited Type IIa characteristics, were believed to have originated from a second 90r plate made up solely of this type that was only ever printed on the thin paper. However, at the 1973 IBRA Exhibition in Munich, a vertical block of twelve was discovered that was composed of Types IIa in the left hand row combined with Types II, I, II, I, IIa & IIa in the right hand row. This discovery put into question the previously held belief of a plate composed solely Type IIa stamps and it also gave rise to a theory that there may, in fact be three different plates. Everaldo N. Santos in his article "Inclinados, o Maior Desafio do Filatelista do Brasil" argues against the three plates scenario and it is his opinion that the second plate consists of Type IIa stamps together with both Type I and Type II stamps.Obviously, any type IIa multiples are very important building blocks in either attempting to complete the layout of this plate or in trying to prove the possible existence of a third plate. The largest franking recorded of the fascinating type IIa, including the second and third largest multiples in existence, the blocks being key items in establishing the curious layout on the plate which includes the type IIa, most desirable; 2010 Moorhouse certificate; RHM 5, 7D; ex-Hubbard.
