2044 og Hellrigl #4a imageHellrigl #4a, 1881 1a Dull deep blue on European wove paper, imperforate, setting 2, positions 58-60, unused bottom margin partial imprint strip of three, without gum as issued, exceptionally large margins on the other three sides as well, strong color and impression on bright white paper, extremely fine; this is a wonderful position piece that does not depend on just the color for identification, Hellrigl states that the inscriptions of setting 2 is exactly the same as setting one without the fancy border, but that is not true in the bottom inscription, the middle letter below the left pair in this strip lacks the two flourishes at top that are found on the other three sides and on all four sides of setting 1, this is confirmed by comparing the sheets of both settings that are contained in this collection; all multiples with marginal inscriptions are very rare and especially so for this key piece showing the difference between setting 1 and 2 (Scott #4; $525.00+; S.G. #4a; £675+; catalog values are for three normal singles). (Image) Est. $500-750

2045 ngbl Hellrigl #4a imageHellrigl #4a, 1881 1a Dull blue on European wove paper, imperforate, complete sheet of 64, setting 2, unused without gum, a spectacular sheet being in the best condition of all the first issue sheets (there are a total of seven, possibly eight, sheets known of all values and settings, perforated or imperforate), this sheet is exceptionally fresh with strong dull blue color on fresh white paper, it possesses full untrimmed sheet margins measuring 250x323mm, the sheet has been folded as all first issue sheets are, this twice vertically and twice horizontally, all between the rows of stamps and hardly apparent on the front, all sixteen of the constant plate flaws show well, a very fine and exceedingly handsome sheet.Setting 2 is distinguished from setting 1 by lacking the fancy ornaments that have now been removed. In addition in the second word of the inscription at left in the bottom margin the middle letter lacks two flourishes that are normally on this letter and are on setting 1 but not setting 2. This sheet is one of only two imperforate sheets of Setting 2 known. No perforated sheets are known of this setting. Additionally this is the better of the two known sheets, the other being in the Vignola collection and shown on page 69 of Hellrigl with sheet selvages somewhat reduced. This is a marvelous exhibition piece of extraordinary rarity and quality; ex-Haverbeck (Scott #4; $11,200.00+; S.G. #4; £14,400+; catalog values are for 64 normal singles). 2060 ngbl Hellrigl #5 imageHellrigl #5, 1881 2a Purple on European wove paper, imperforate, complete sheet of 64, setting 2, unused without gum, a marvelous unique sheet that is exceptionally well preserved, showing all constant plate flaws that exist in this setting, this sheet is exceptionally fresh with rich purple color on fresh white paper, it possesses full untrimmed sheet margins measuring 252x325mm, the sheet has been folded as all first issue sheets are, twice vertically with one through the fourth vertical row and twice horizontally with one faintly through second horizontal row, there are also a few natural cliche pressure wrinkles in the margins between rows, all are barely perceptible from the front and is actually are only mentioned for accuracy as this is a very fine and exceedingly handsome sheet. The three different settings of the Two Anna value on European wove paper are considered well documented by students despite the fact that this is presently the only known sheet of this value and certainly the only known setting 2 sheet, Setting 1 has the same fancy ornaments as setting 1 of the One Anna value, but this is documented by a sheet from an unidentified Danish collection exhibited in Londo in 1939. This sheet has disappeared and is not in the hands of any Nepal specialist. Furthermore there are no marginal pieces, not even singles showing setting 1. So unless the lost sheet reappears setting 1 will remain simply an eye witness report that confirmed no inverted cliches. There are no sheets of Setting 3 but several marginal pairs and singles show a slightly different alignment and position of the inscriptions and the existence of an inverted clichet in position 21 that does not exist in setting 1 or 2. This sheet then stands as the only extant sheet of the Two Annas Setting Two. The Hellrigl collection contained the next largest multiple which was a full sheet lacking only position 1 (illustrated on page 123 of his handbook and lot 3084 in Sale 206 of Corinphila 15 June 2016). This is a marvelous exhibition piece of extraordinary rarity; ex-Haverneck (Scott #4; $12,800.00+; S.G. #4; £14,400+; catalog values are for 64 normal singles). (Image) Est. $7,500-10,000LE
