1204 c 594 image#594, 1c Green coil waste, remarkably well centered for this notoriously difficult coil waste issue, with the perforations clearing the design all around, tied to Easter greeting picture post card to New York by "New York, N.Y. Sta. Y/Apr 17, 1924 slogan machine cancel, very fine and especially choice; 2001 PF certificate. The 1923 One Cent Green Coil Waste stamp is not only one of the rarest stamps in 20th century philately, with fewer than 100 confirmed examples, but it also is widely regarded as one of the most difficult of all U.S. issues to find in any kind of premium condition. Virtually every example one encounters is terribly off center, with its perforations cutting the design on at least one side and, invariably, most have flaws ranging from minor to severe. Whenever a true gem example appears at auction it always commands substantial premiums over its catalog value and attracts considerable bidder excitement. In addition to being a highly desirable and sought-after stamp off cover, the One Cent Green Coil Waste on cover is a great rarity, as only four covers are known bearing this stamp. Two are postcards, each bearing a single stamp and both are used from New York City in 1924. There is a pair on an envelope, also used from New York City in 1924, but the perforations on the pair cut the design, and there is a single franking on an envelope from New York paying the unsealed circular rate.
