When a single example comes up for auction, bidding is quite spirited, with the realized price usually very close to the current $2,250.00 catalog value. This is understandable, since there are at most 35 singles available from the original pane of 85. What's more, this block contains some additionally rare items, such as the only two known plate blocks, as well as the desirable foreign entry of the 70c stamp, a single of which realized $8,000.00, plus the buyer's premium, in our December, 2005 Premier Sale. We have simply cataloged this as ten blocks of four and ten singles, without any premium for the plate blocks or the rare variety.A magnificent and visually striking multiple for someone who wants to own an instantly recognizable icon of United States philately. Excluding the relatively common 2c value, there is only one other Third Issue Invert on full document (offered in the previous lot), and this block of five is the largest known Third Issue Invert multiple. The fact that it is comes on one of the rarest revenue inverted centers makes it even more remarkable (the block represents five of the 29 known copies). We believe this to be the most important item in all of revenue philately, as its rarity and beauty are instantly recognized.
