1848-59 Post Paid Issue » Latest Impressions (SG 23-25) continued...
Lot Symbol Catalog No. Descrip Opening
30140 25 image1856-58 Post Paid 2d. blue, position 2, complete to very large margins for the great majority, paying the 2d village to Port Louis rate up to 1/2 oz on folded cover, tied by numeral '16' of two concentric rings, with matching octagonal 'EASTERN SUBURB/OC19.1857' hs and crowned circle of Port Louis struck one day later, a very rare usage Kanai states that this office "was opened in 1851 and probably existed for a few years as it does not appear in later Post Office lists and No. 16 is recorded as being used later in Rivière Such, presumably after Eastern Suburb closed". It is presumed that Eastern Suburb may be another name for Rivière Sèche. This example features the finest strike of this fascinating postmark Provenance: Chand (Image 1) (Image 2)

Str. Northam - Via Suez', charged with '8' cachet due on receipt, backstamped with 'GPO / AU 8 1859 / MAURITIUS' cds the cover is soiled and with some creases, stains slightly affecting the franking, still though a rare early-impression usage Note: The P&O 'Northam' sailed from Sydney on schedule with the July mail and anchored in Port Louis on 7th August, and she left the next day for Aden and cleared the port on 17th August for Suez reaching on the 28th, after having been grounded on a reef in the Red Sea from 20th to 25th August, (and succeeding in getting the ship afloat) the 'Northam' put her mail on board the P&O 'Panther' which sailed for Marseille via Alexandria, where it arrived on 12th September Provenance: Vikram Chand Expertise: Cert.
