1332   image2nd SUAKIN EXPEDITION - EGYPTIAN STATIONERY CARD USED IN SUAKIN JUST PRIOR TO OPENING OF BRITISH ARMY P.O.: 19/22 March 1885 usage of the Egypt 20pa brown PC (lower right corner crease) to Ireland (Dublin; endorsed with "April 7th" arrival) cancelled by a very fine "SOUAKIN" cds (22 Mar.). From a Medical Officer who writes; "I was President of a Med[ical]. Board on Capt. Freud & have invalided him back home. He had a partial sunstroke. A force went out this morning../ I saw them off & went some miles out; could see lots of Arabs on hills, but as they came in, I believe there was not a fight. I believe there will be an advance tomorrow. I am not going... Jack." Very rare and attractive Sudan usage card. 1334   imageVERY RARE "Debbeh/23-1-97" MANUSCRIPT CANCEL ON EGYPT 1pi UPRATING 5M POSTAL STATIONERY ENV. TO IRELAND: Remarkable 23 Jan. 1897 usage of the Egypt 6m Red P. Stat. env. (slight wear; horiz. fold in centre clear of stamps & marks) from the small village of Ed Debba (or Debbeh) in Sudan to Ireland uprated with a fine Egypt 1pi Blue which has been cancelled by a clear Manuscript "Debbeh/23-1-97", while both stamps have been tied/cancelled by a fine "WADI-HALFA/CAMP" cds (1 Feb.) with a second strike alongside. This appears to be the earliest recorded postal mark for this P.O. and the only example known on cover. We have only recorded one other example of this Debbeh m/s mark; on a strip of three Egypt 5m cancelled by "Debbeh/15.6.97". (1m-10pi) TIED TO PAPER BY "WADI HALFA" CDS EX KITCHENER's PERSONAL TELEGRAPHIST: Part sheet of plain lined paper (ant damage at lower left) with 8 values each tied by a 30 Sept. 1897 "WADI HALFA" cds (the 2pi affected by ants; plus a separate undamaged similar loose 2pi value). Originally hinged to card with the pencil note "Given to me by Gaddis Abdelsaid, the recently retired Post Master of Khartoum, who, as a young man accompanied Lord Kitchener as his personal telegraphist throughout the Dongola Campaign. Gaddis Eff stated that the date - 30 SEP 97 - was the day Lord Kitchener (and he) left Wadi Halfa for the front. Damaged by white ants." Remarkable souvenir.
