PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND
Lot Catalog No. Descrip Opening
804   imagePRINCE EDWARD ISLAND C.D.S ON COVER TO G.B. EXCEPTIONALLY WITH LONDON "PACKET LETTER"; Fine 1 Aug. 1818 E from Charlottetown to London endorsed “P[repai]d to Halifax 8[d]” in red with an unusually clear “PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND/Aug:1/1818” 1st-Type Charlottetown cds on the front, as well as a partial “HALIFAX” transit cds (20 Aug). It was carried on the British Packet ship ‘Queensbury’ (ex NY) to Falmouth; at London (17 Sept. cds) it was charged “2/4”, which was the standard 1s-3d Packet rate plus 11d inland from Falmouth to London, apparently also plus a further 2d for local London delivery. Most exceptionally (the only example recorded?) it also has the boxed London “PACKET LETTER” mark on the front (there was no Falmouth “CANADA/F” mark and the “AMERICA/F” mark seems to have been used primarily on U.S. mails). Of Exhibition Quality. [Ex Steinhart, 2005 & ex Hugh Wood, 2020.]Cross Reference: TRANSATLANTIC MAIL, LONDON POSTAL HISTORY, SHIP LETTERS, NOVA SCOTIA (Image)

809   imageEARLY "SHIP-LETTER/LONDON" (C.D.S.) COVER EX EAST INDIAMAN 'NORTHUMBERLAND' TO G.B.; 24 Dec. 1805 EL (folds to show heading inside alongside the address-panel) from the Captain of an East Indiaman (bound from Cork, Ireland to Calcutta) - headed from the "Northumberland E.I.M., St. Helena” - to England; the contents note that "our stay here will, I fear, be very tedious, as the Government are, in clearing us, slow in the extreme... this hasty letter you will get by the Medusa, Frigate, who is on her passage home from Bengal with the melancholy news of the death of the great & good [Lord] Cornwallis [Governor General & C-in-C]...".
