1573   imagePLYMOUTH TO FRANCE - MILL PRISON P.O.W. LETTER & CENSORED COVER EX PRISON HULK 'HECTOR'; 17 Feb. 1799 EL (slightly damp-affected with paper weakened in places) from "Jean Chevalier" giving his return address as; "Au Bureaux de la Marine de Paris Charge de l'Administration des Prisonniers de Guerre en Angleterre a Mille Prison, Plymouth". Endorsed before sealing "payer au cordier pour le port de lettre 4s[ous]" as it was presumably handed to a returning exchanged POW - a ship's rope-maker - to take with him to France, but he posted it on arrival at "28/MORLAIX" so it was charged "11" (sous). Rare thus. Also, June 1810 EL (some wear and a blank side-flap removed inside) from POW "Bardonenche" headed from "Plymouth, [Prison Ship] Hector" to his sister in Lyons charged "11" (no other postal marks) along with manuscript censor's "Exd. F.D." on the flap. Bardonenche asks for money and talks at length about the possibilities of an exchange - particularly for a British POW in Montpellier. An early Plymouth POW cover from a Prison Hulk with a rare Censor's marking. (2) Cross Reference: FRANCE, MILITARY - P.O.W. MAIL (Image) (Image2) (Image3) (Image4)

BRIEUX" on the front and a partly fine London double oval "TRANSPORT OFFICE/[Crown]/G.R./PRISONERS OF WAR" mark (overstruck by horseshoe "PLYMOUTH" transit mark) on the top flap with 3 May London cds nearby. NICHOLAS' - LETTERS TO P.O.W.s BUT HELD IN PARIS P.O.'s "CABINET NOIR": 17 Nov. 1806 EL (cleverly folded and with wafer seal) to "M. Capprou Officier du navire La Sophie, Prisonnier de Gaire a bor du Bienfaisant a Plimouth. Pour remettre au [mon]sieur Simont Peter Demange" (presumably Demange was illiterate so his letters went via his senior officer Capprou?) with partly fine "P.82.P/ST. DIES" on the front along with red Paris "P.P.P.P." and having "15" prepaid rate on reverse. There is a distinctive flattened oval red (censor's?) wax seal at the top of the inside page.; 18 Nov. 1806 EL (slight seal offset stain on front) to "Sieur. Douallan, Prisonnier de Guerre a bord du ponton Le St. Isidore a Plimouth" with partly fine "21/GUINGAMP" as sent unpaid and so returned to Paris. There is a distinctive flattened oval red (censor's?) wax seal at the top of the inside page.; plus 2 further examples for prisonners on board the 'Le Bienfaisant' & 'Le St. Nicholas'. All clearly never delivered - letters still in transit after Napoleon's suspension of Mail exchange from 21 Nov. 1806 are thought to have remained in the Paris P.O.'s Secret Office ("Cabinet Noir"). 1578   imageTAVISTOCK - VERY RARE 7 YEARS WAR COVER EX INDIA P.O.W. ON PAROLE TO FRANCE; 23 May 1762 EL (full typed transcript) from "Fontenille" while a POW on Parole in "Tavistok" to his uncle in Floransac charged only "10" - possibly posted in Paris. The writer says that letters to him should be addressed to "Mr. Chalier, Correspondent of the French East India Company at Plymouth to be sent on to M. de Fontenille, Captain of the Lorraine Regiment, on Parole at Tavistock." He has not had replies to his letters; he had hoped to be returned to France on May 1, but now thinks it will not be for a few more months. He says that he is still suffering from scurvy, but still almost destitute so that he has suggested to the former Governor of Pondicherry, Georges Duval de Leyrit (1717-64) - also a Prisoner (in Plymouth) - that he should draw a bank bill on his uncle for some money. Rare 7 Years War letter from a POW captured in India; only a handful of pre-1794 letters from British POW Camps have been recorded. Cross Reference: INDIA, FRANCE, MILITARY - P.O.W. 1579   imageTAVISTOCK - VERY RARE 7 YEARS WAR COVER EX INDIA P.O.W. ON PAROLE TO FRANCE; 1 July 1762 EL from "Fontenille" while a POW on Parole in "Tavistock" to his uncle in Floransac charged "16" - posted in "RENNES" (fair s. line on the front - possibly landed at nearby St. Malo). The writer says; "I did not allow a single vessel to leave, not even the Caravan, without giving you my news ... I was reduced to such great poverty that I was obliged to draw on you a bill of exchange of one hundred ecus… M de St Sernin, Captain of the Grenadiers in the Regiment, had lent me some money .... [It costs] 54 livres per month for board and lodging without wine or beer. 18 francs a room, wine at 45 sols per bottle ... It is more expensive - double and triple - than in France... The aromatic baths that I am made to take three times a week and the great exercise that I do contributes a lot to my recovery ... a year of siege, or blockade, reduced me to sad misery; plus 6 months voyage in a ship, one on top of the other, and salted meat - never enough - all this was very hard to stomach when I arrived...". 1581   imageTAVISTOCK - VERY RARE 7 YEARS WAR EX INDIA P.O.W. ON PAROLE - TO FRANCE WITH NEWS OF RELEASE; 11 Aug. 1762 EL (ink-etched mark just affects address) from "Fontenille" while a POW on Parole in "Tavistock" to his uncle in Floransac charged "10". The writer says; "We learned from last Saturday's Courier that his British Majesty was prepared to allow us to return to France; for this purpose, they gave orders to prepare ships to transport us. As it only concerns the prisoners from India, I assume that I will be among those who will have this happiness ...". He also gives detailed accounts of what he has had to spend (and on what) while he has been a prisoner; "Since leaving India, I have not bought any linen, socks or other similar things all of which I can do without for the present. I received [from you] 29 guineas twice equating to 400 French livres, the expenditure of which follows for your information...".
