54   imageHAITI/FRANCE (THE 7 YEARS WAR) - P.O.W. CORRESPONDENCE; Three ELs from the Gobbe Correspondence regarding prisoner exchange and repatriation. A 20 Aug. 1759 EL from "le Duc Delorge" in "Bordeaux" but posted in nearby Lesparre-Medoc to Gobbe's father in Redon charged "16" (via Rennes) with an unrecorded (?) P.O. manuscript "Lesparre" on the front regarding prisoner exchange; a 5 May 1762 EL from "NANTES" (faint s. line on front) ex Gobbe, soon after his return to France from prison, to his father in Redon charged "4" sols; and a 3 June 1767 EL from Gobbe in "Saint Marc, Isle de St. Domingo" (the small port on the western coast of Haiti) to Redon charged "10" (from La Rochelle via Nantes) with a mainly fine "COL.N.PAR/LA ROCHELLE" on the front and endorsed "Par le vessau L'Enriette de la Rochelle QDG & PABP" on the reverse. The latter is a very early letter from Haiti. (3)Cross Reference: FRANCE, MILITARY - P.O.W. MAIL, NETHERLANDS (Image) (Image2) (Image3)

55   imageNAPOLEONIC WARS - LETTERS FROM P.O.W.s REGARDING RELEASE, BACK-PAY & 4-MONTH LEAVE: Very fine 17 Sept. 1804 EL to Paris with fine "74/LE HAVRE" and "4" charge on the front, from a POW's wife asking for help her obtain her husband's exchange; very fine 8 June 1806 EL from POW on parole in "Tours" to "The Minister of War, Paris" with mainly fine "36/TOURS" on the front and initially wrongly charged "5" but that was cancelled when the addressee was noticed and a red Paris "Service" mark applied on the front, while the flap was endorsed "Bureau de Prisonniers de Guerre Anglais". He asks that "...having received my passport to return to England, I thought proper to apply to General Lynch for the money due to an Officer of my Rank since my being Prisoner of War in France, which demand he has done me the honor to comply with...". Scarce POW cover from this town.; very fine 15 May 1809 EL from POW merchant ship Captain in "Verdun" to the Minister of War in Paris with v. fine "P.53.P/VERDUN/SUR-MEUSE" on the front and "18c" on the flap asking to be returned to his home in Danzig after his ship had been taken by a French privateer; fine 20 Mar. 1811 EL from "Brest" to POW at "Rue Deserte No.2, Verdun" (on parole) with fine "28/BREST" and "10" rate on the front. The letter assures the POW that the writer would happily attest to the need for Burn to return to England (on his honour to return) to "settle your affairs". Rare evidence that there were circumstances under which POWs could be allowed to return home for a fixed period on compassionate grounds as long as they promised to return at the end of that time; Also, 2 letters showing that trade continued despite war - 12 Aug. 1800 EL (some staining) from a French emigre in London to a firm in Cognac smuggled across the Channel and so with a fair red "74/DIEPPE" and ms "11" rate on the front; plus 12 Dec. 1809 EL posted on arrival in London with Local Post hs "2" on the front and 13/15 Jan. ds on reverse. The letter was then turned and readdressed to London. The letter bemoans the current problems of trade for ongoing Spanish merchant contacts with Britain after Napoleon's invasion of Spain in 1808. 56   imageNAPOLEONIC WARS - LETTERS FROM ENGLISH & GERMAN P.O.W.'s IN BESANCON, CAMBRAI OR FONTAINEBLEAU; 6 Mar. 1813 EL (dusting affecting address side & flaps) written in English by POW "Wilfrid Mossop" in "Besancon" to his mother charged "1/1" inland rate from London (12 Apr. cds on reverse) to Whitehaven with a partly fine double-oval London "TRANSPORT OFFICE/[Crown]/G.R/PRISONERS OF WAR" on the front; very fine 28 May 1810 EL (sealed with wax) from POW "Wholer Esers...pas Anglois mais du Duche D'Holstein" (captured on an English merchant vessel returning from Portugal) in the "Depot des Prisonniers Anglais a la Citadelle de cette ville" prepaid ("4[?]" on flap) to "General d'Hunebourg de Division Ministre de la Guerre...Paris" with mainly fine "P.57.P/CAMBRAY" on the front beside black Paris boxed "P.P" (30 Mar. cds on back). The letter is a plea for clemency from a German citizen who claims not to have been on any British Naval vessel. Rare thus. [Roumet Cert. (2020)]; and very fine "12 Thermidor An XI" [31 July 1803] EL (sealed with wafer) from "John Collier of English origin, resident in France since" 11 Aug. 1802 on parole in "Fontainebleau" to the Minister of War in Paris with very fine "T" in circle on the front and Paris arrival cds on the flap. The letter asks for the writer to be allowed to rejoin his wife and two children in La Trinite. Most unusual. (3) Cross Reference: FRANCE, MILITARY - P.O.W. 57   imageNAPOLEONIC WARS - LETTERS FROM ENGLISH P.O.W.'s TO FRENCH OFFICIALS REQUESTING RELEASE; Very fine 7 Aug. 1803 EL (the paper with printed & embossed tax stamps; sealed with wax) from "James Jolin" to the Minister for War in Paris with fair "73/MELUN" on the front and "6[decimes]" charge on the flap. Jolin complains that he is an innocent party.; very fine 21 Jan. 1808 letter (no postal markings; probably sent under separate cover) from POW "Strickland Kingston" (Infantry Major) addressed "A Sa Majeste Napoleon, Empereur des Francais" asking to be allowed to return to England because he had arranged via his brother for 68 French POWs to be released; fine 4 July 1810 EL (in English; wax seal) from POW "James Dunning" in "Lyons" to the Minister of War in Paris with fair large "68/LYONS" on the front (no postal rate being free); Dunning states that he was amongst 22 POWs lodging in a building in Auxonne that had been burnt to ashes (along with many of Dunning's possessions) - he asks for his former allowance to be reinstated now that he has moved; very fine 24 Nov. 1812 EL (in English; sealed with wafer) from "Geo[rg]e. Wilson", a "Non-commissioned Officer (Prisoner of War)" in "Grenoble" to the "Duke de Feltre, Minister of War in Paris" with mainly fine "37/GRENOBLE" on the front (no postal rate - delivered free). Wilson acknowledges the receipt of 100 francs, but advises the Minister that he has not been correctly classified and is still being "treated as an [ordinary] prisoner". Fascinating historical content in need of further research. (4 covers) Cross Reference: FRANCE, MILITARY - P.O.W. MAIL (Image) (Image2) (Image3) (Image4)
