SOUTH AUSTRALIA
Lot Catalog No. Descrip Opening
302   imageFASTEST OUTBOUND TOULMIN PACKET VOYAGE - RARE SOUTH AUSTRALIAN DESTINATION COVER; 2 May 1847 env. from “BAKEWELL” (Derbys.; cds on front) to “Adelaide, South Australia” prepaid “2/-” for the Toulmin Packet (rare double rate; above ½oz & up to 1oz) but posted a day after the regular (1st of the month) departure of the Toulmin Packet ‘Sterling’ and so delayed in London (3 May “PAID” c.d.s. on the front) and sent down to Gravesend to catch the 1 June 1847 departure of the next Toulmin Packet, the ‘Eleanor Lancaster’. This ship arrived in Sydney on 13 Sept. after what was to be the fastest of all outbound Toulmin Packet voyages taking only 104 days (the average Toulmin outward passage was 126 days from 1844 to 1849). This letter was then put on board the ‘Commodore’ by the Sydney P.O. (on 15 Sept.) which eventually reached Adelaide on 10 Oct. (hence the “G.P.O./ [Crown]/SOUTH AUSTRALIA” c.d.s.) which was two days slower than the September ‘Overland Mail’ between the two cities; it was charged a further “9[d]” on delivery for the ‘above ½oz & up to 1oz’ ingoing Ship Letter rate. Toulmin Packet covers to South Australia are rare.Cross Reference: MARITIME MAIL (Image)
