GREAT BRITAIN - JERSEY POSTAL HISTORY
Lot Catalog No. Descrip Opening
1839   imageFRANCE/JERSEY - UNIQUE(?) 4d ROSE-CARMINE FORWARDING LETTER FOUND IN JERSEY IN A NEWSPAPER; Extraordinary 6 Mar. 1858 EL from Paris to "Elbeuf" (nr. Rouen) which has a French 20c Blue but no Paris markings because it was accidentally caught up in a newspaper inside the Paris P.O. during sorting and that newspaper took it to Jersey! Inside the letter, a "Frances Fisher" has added a note in French headed "2 Haut Bois, St. Heliers, Jersey. 10 March 1858", in which she explains that she had "found this letter open, with three papers inside, slipped between the pages of a 'Galignani's Messenger' that I received yesterday from my mother...". The helpful Ms. Fisher endorsed it "Via St. Malo" (there is a v. fine red 2-ring "ILES-C/ST. MALO" cds on the front) and also added a G.B. 4d Rose-Carmine over the uncancelled French 20c Blue (the foot of the 4d can easily be carefully lifted to show the 20c beneath) which is tied by a partly fine Jersey "409" Numeral, with the Jersey red oval "P-D." alongside and a black "JERSEY" cds (10 Mar.) on the reverse. It is amazing that this very Missent cover reached its correct addressee and in good time! Unique story? Major-General and friend of Southey & Wordsworth) at "Douglass" to his wife in Keswick with a very fine "ISLE OF MAN" Horseshoe (IM3; only recorded 1803-8 in black - a shorter period of use than in blue - slight creasing does not detract) across the join on the reverse. Charged "3[d]" (Packet rate to Whitehaven) and then "8[d]" (extra 5d on to Keswick), though unusually headed by the sender above the address "Isle of Man" with the date (perhaps to try to make the P.O. think it was a free letter?!) The contents describe the writer's bad seasickness on the overnight crossing to the island and his safe arrival that morning.
