1583   imageTINY GLASGOW LATE FEE PAID "L" UDC ON CASH-PAID DOUBLE-RATE COVER TO CALIFORNIA; 18 Mar. 1854 EL from Glasgow ("Well-Park Brewery" printed heading inside) to San Francisco "P. Mail Steamer via United States" (endorsed as having been "Recd. p. Str. Oregon" inside) prepaid in cash for the double 1s-2½d rate (red m/s "2/5", but also with a v. fine tiny "GLASGOW/L" UDC showing that it had the Late Fee paid and so with 1d Red (poor margins; does not belong) as well. There is a faint black SF "PAID" on the front and three 18 Mar. Liverpool backstamps but no other Glasgow marks. 1584   imageTHE FULL SET - THE 1st-ISSUE SURFACE PRINTED SET (4d, 6d & 1/-) ON COVER TO FRANCE (1s-4d RATE + 6d LATE FEE); Spectacular and very rare 28 June 1859 EL from London (Hambro & Son cachet on the front) to Paris with an exceptional franking of the first three Surface Printed stamps of G.B.; 1/- Green (wing margin at right beneath the 6d) + 6d Lilac + 4d Rose-Carmine all tied by very fine London "15" Diamond Numerals with red London "PD" (Paid to Destination) in oval and Calais transit cds (29 June) on the front. This was the 'above 3/4 oz & up to 1oz' 1s-4d quadruple rate plus the 6d Late Fee. As it was a last-minute posting (the 6d Late Fee only applied from 7pm to 7.30pm at this date at London's Chief Office) there is no London backstamp - presumably it was omitted in the rush. We do not recall having seen this rare combination of the first three Surface Printed stamps on a cover to France before.
