Includes 4 margin 1840 1d black SH (plus 7 damaged examples!) & 3 margin 1840 2d blue with complete black MX; 1841 1d red imperfs. (75), 1841 2d blues (28, majority are sub-standard), 1854-57 1d red 'Stars' (c.370), 2d blues (8), 1d red 'Plates' (c.550), 1858-69 2d blue 'Plates' (90, incl. poor example optd. "SPECIMEN"), ½d 'bantams' (c.65); representative ranges of surface printed issues with platings of 1864 4d vermilion and 1873-80 2½d rose & 2½d blue. Condition very mixed with many perfins. 1887 Jubilee set mint to 1/- (both types), KEVII defins. to 9d mint and to 5/- used, various QV/KEVII used Officials, then mint & used ranges of KGV (No Seahorses & Arms high vals used only), KGVI defins, QEII Wildings incl. Castles. KGV group includes a good used (light parcel cancel) example of PUC £1 black on small piece, and QEII includes unusual 1957 Scout Jubilee set perfined "B.P." and Scroll insignia by Slopers. POSTAL REFORMS

898   imageWELSH POSTAL REFORMER SAMUEL ROBERTS - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED WITH 1d BLACK; 8/9 Jan. 1841 EL (overall staining but complete and sound) from "Llanbrynmair" to Bala with near-4m 1d Black (NC; shaved at bottom left) just tied by orange-brown MX matching the mainly fine "NEWTOWN" cds on the front. The letter (from Samuel Roberts, 1800-85) concerns his and his brother's apologies that they cannot attend a meeting "at Llanrwst" and that he cannot "prepare some Resolutions to be submitted to the Meeting" due to ill health. The subject of the meeting has yet to be identified. Boldly signed by "Samuel Roberts". With 1985 commemorative PC with photo of Roberts the "POSTAL REFORMER" ref. his having been given a testimonial fund of £400 in 1883 for his work on cheap overseas postage. [See also his pamphlet in the lot below.] The only Samuel Roberts letter that we have recorded in private hands. FRANCHISE REFORMS" published by "A Llanbrynmair Farmer" (in Newtown) and with the first letter initialled "S.R.". The only example that we have recorded in private hands. With 1985 commemorative PC with photo of Roberts the "POSTAL REFORMER" ref. his having been given a testimonial fund of £400 in 1883 for his work on cheap overseas postage.
