1851   imageGEORGE V INITIALLED PENCIL NOTE REF. A LETTER FROM THE P.O. (REF. STAMPS DESIGNS?); [c.1 July 1911] “POST OFFICE No.61” imprint O.H.M.S. mourning envelope addressed to the King's Secretary "Sir F. Ponsonby" (Sir Frederick E.G. Ponsonby was Assistant Keeper of the Privy Purse at the time and seems to have been the interface between the Post Office and the King) who redirected it within the Palace to "The King" in red. George V then endorsed it; “An absolute lie as far as I am concerned. G.R.I.” and addressed it back to "Sir. F. Ponsonby". The letter that this envelope contained was most likely written by Sir Matthew Nathan, Secretary to the G.P.O. at the time. The King’s acrimonious annotation probably referred to the disastrously poor quality (engraving and printing) of the first KGV postage stamps. An earlier (28 June 1911) letter from Ponsonby at Buckingham Palace to Sir Matthew is recorded that quoted the King; “…It was a great disappointment to him that the new stamps have been such a failure” and asks “what the cost of producing a new Stamp would be…”. [This letter is illustrated in Douglas Muir's 'George V and the G.P.O.', 2010.] Clearly the King blamed the Post Office fairly and squarely; he was the most keen royal philatelist of all, and when he came to the throne he had expected a top-notch design for his first stamps as King, but in the event he was bitterly disappointed. Unique item. [Ex Cavendish 20 May 2010 auction; lot 1257, realised £325.] Cross Reference : AUTOGRAPHS, ROYALTY, ROYALTY, POSTAL STATIONERY, K.G.V (Image)
