1436   imageTIME-CLOCK "TIME WHEN POSTED" FLAP 1d RED COVER EX LANDPORT/PORTSMOUTH; Fine 28 Dec. 1871 env. (opened out for display) from "LANDPORT/CHURCH RD." (cds on reverse) to Droitwich with 1d Red (pl. 136?) tied by a very fine "PORTSMOUTH/625" Duplex; the flap has a very attractive printed blue embossed clock-face with "A.M." and "P.M." either side and "TIME WHEN POSTED" beneath, leaving the clock's hands to be inserted by the sender. In this case no clock hands have been added. Under the flap is the imprint; "MANUFACTURED BY DE LA RUE & Co./FOR WILLS & SON, SOUTHSEA". One of very few recorded examples of this 'keep the Post Office honest' envelope intended to prevent unnecessary delays to letters. Cross Reference : HAMPSHIRE (Image)

Includes 4 x 1840 1d blacks (Pl. 3, 4, 6 & 8 - 2 are 4 margin, the other 2 just touching in corner), 10 x 1841 1d red imperfs & 2d blue, 15 x 1d red 'stars' and range of 113 1d red plates to 218, incl. Pl. 198 inv. wmk. Good selection of later line-engraved and surface printed issues, noting 1867 5/- wmk. Maltese Cross, 1883/84 2/6d, 5/- & 10/- plus 'green & lilacs' less the 9d value. Also £1 brown-lilac (Crowns wmk.) SG 185, a good sound example with crayon mark. Lot also includes the 1847-54 three embossed values, all cut square, and QV Jubilee used range. 1440   imageVERY FIRST 2d 'POSTAGE STAMP' - SILK-THREADS DICKINSON/WHITING "LONDON DISTRICT POST" ESSAY; July 1837 2d Green "V[Crown]R/LONDON/DISTRICT POST" "POST OFFICE COVER" letter-sheet Essay (wear to original folds as usual, some slight scuffs to plain flap); this was produced by Charles Whiting on John Dickinson's silk-threads paper (the threads are only present across the address-panel) and was included only in the 7th July 1837 Parliamentary 9th Report from the "Commission to Inquire into the Management of the Post Office"; the similar 1d Essays were included in the same Report in both envelope and letter-sheet formats and were also included in some of Hill's pamphlets, so they are much commoner than this 2d Essay.
