MACAO
Lot Catalog No. Descrip Opening
879   image2nd OPIUM WAR - SHIP-TO-SHIP COVER FROM "[H.M.S.] ACTAEON OFF MACAO FORT" TO "H.M.S. NIGER"; Fine 4 Dec. 1857 env. (+ original contents) written & signed by British naval hero Captain "Wm. Thornton Bate" on his ship leading the British ship approach to start the second attack on Canton, at the start of which he was shot dead by the Chinese defenders storming the city walls later that month, on 29 Dec. 1857. The letter is addressed to "Captain [later Admiral] The Honble. Arthur Cochrane RN, CB, H.M.S. Niger", and is naturally without postal marks being sent between two ships in the advancing Fleet. The contents (fully typed transcript included) are written in an unusually illegible hand (perhaps because he - like Lord Nelson - had to write left-handed, having been wounded in Feb. 1857 during the first attack on Canton), and include; "We moved up here the other night, taking advantage of a high spring tide... I do not like to sound above the Macao Fort for fear of awakening suspicion. As far as we can discover I feel pretty certain the passage is not blocked up... The ships occupying Whampoa will, I hope, throw them on another scent. One thing we are sure of, and that is carrying 9 feet to Canton... if the worst comes to the worst, our Gun Boats can fit with that.... I quite expect the rascals will send a fire raft or an infernal machine down on us the first dark night we are exposed on either tide to their villainy." Bate was also in command of of the British garrison inside besieged Macao Fort for 4 months from January to May 1857. Rare and fascinating cover sent from the very heart of operations during the 2nd Opium War. Cross Reference : MILITARY, MARITIME MAIL, CHINA, AUTOGRAPHS (Image)
