847   imageTWO SCARCE ITEMS - PART VERY RARE "INSUFFICIENTLY PAID/FOR BRINDISI ROUTE/DEFICIENT POSTAGE/1d" ON HK 8c WITH BLUE "S1"; Extraordinary c.Oct. 1870 small piece (of newspaper wrapper?) with an overlapping HK 8c Orange cancelled by part blue Shanghai "S1" Numeral, but also just tied to the piece by the top right corner of the very rare boxed London "INSUFFICIENTLY PAID/FOR BRINDISI ROUTE/DEFICIENT POSTAGE/1d" mark that was only used on Printed Paper rate or newspaper wrappers that were re-routed due to the Siege of Paris in late 1870 to early 1871. Only a handful of covers with this 1d Brindisi mark have been recorded (from NSW for example), but we are not aware of one having been recorded on a Hong Kong or Treaty Port cover. Also 1870 Perf. 12½ 4c slate with good part "B 62" numeral cancellation. Some perfs. a little pulled at right as is usual for this issue. Fine. SG 9f £275. "via Brindisi" with 5d Dull Green tied by a fine "BURY ST EDMUNDS/97" Duplex, having a lovely strike of the "SINGAPORE/A/TO HONG KONG" cds on the side-flap. Plus 3 Oct. 1884 env. (light stains) to "Hong-Kong, China" with 6d Dull Green tied by v. fine "GLASGOW/159" Duplex with plain HK arrival backstamp. Unusual destination for these 5d and 6d stamps; the UPU rate was 5d from 1880, so the 6d rate may show a 1d Late Fee or be an overpayment. Good pair.
