2162   imageRARE PRE-1640 COVER WITH POSTAL RATE - "1 Sch" SINGLE RATE FROM KENT TO ANTWERP; 2/22 June 1639 EL (in Flemish; with red wax seal) from "Douver" (folds neatly to display internal heading alongside the address for display purposes) to Juan nan der Bequen in "Antwerpen" charged "1 Sch[illing]." by the Thurn & Taxis Post for delivery (?from Calais). It is not known how such early letters from Kent crossed the Channel, but it may have been on the Packet ships that were employed by the official 'public' post to France. Fine and attractive; 1630s letters from Britain with postal rates are rare - much rarer than those of the Corsini correspondence to London in the 1500s. Exhibition Quality. Wekett, one of the four Messengers in Ordinary at the Recept of her Majestie's Excheqr." made by Wekett or his Deputy attending "the Lord High Treasurer of Great Britain... and Mr. Secretary Lowndes", listing the dates of each journey (presumably carrying State letters and documents) from the Treasury in London (Whitehall) to Queen Anne's Court at "Windsor" (several times), twice to "Chiswick", once to "Tunbridge", once to "Quainton Mead in Buckinghamshire" and once to "Newmarket". Approved for payment at the foot by "Wm. Lowndes" (1652-1724; Treasury Sec. 1695-1724) et al. Treasury Warrants for Messengers of the 16th century are quite frequently seen, but 18th century examples such as this are much rarer.
