SHIP LETTERS
Lot Catalog No. Descrip Opening
2068   imageFALMOUTH (CORNWALL) - GREEN "CADIZ/F" DATESTAMP; Sep. 1810 EL from "Cadiz" to Manchester charged "4/-" with a very fine green "CADIZ/30SE30/F" datestamp (creased) on the front. The letter was carried by the "Walsingham" Packet Ship. The contents (full transcript) relate to an insurance claim for the cargo of the Ship "Experiment", and mention the stagnation of the War. Ex Philbrick and Gunn Cross Reference : CORNWALL, SPAIN (Image)

Starting at £ 85

SOLD for £140.00
Closing..Sep-09, 01:00 PM EST.
2069   imageHAVERFORD WEST - VERY RARE EARLY 3-LINE "HAVER/FORDWEST/SHIP LRE" ON COVER WITH "BARBA/DOES"; Fine 20 Oct. 1777 EL (reached GB in 1778; "14/IA" London arrival Bishop Mark) from "Barbados" to "Jamaica Coffee House" in London endorsed "Per [Ship] Snow Nancy [Captain] Wm. Jenkins via Bristol" on the front, but having a partly fine very rare "HAVER/FORDWEST/SHIP LRE" (Rob. S1, 1773-78 only; just three covers believed to be recorded, of which this is the latest known date) nicely placed on the front (the strike crossed at foot by filing crease). Most unusually there is also a rare early "BARBA/DOES" (partly fine) on the lower flap. Of the other two recorded strikes one is badly creased and almost indecipherable while the other is about 60% clear. [The latter cover - with no Barbados mark - was sold in Cavendish's 17 Nov. 2011 auction; lot 2653, £2,890 inc. BP.] There was no example in the Peter Stone collection. One of the rarest of all British Ship Letter ports; no Haverford West Ship Letters are recorded after this example. Cross Reference : BARBADOS, WELSH POSTAL HISTORY, COFFEE HOUSES (Image)

Strathfield Say" with very fine step-type "LEWES/SHIP LETTER" (Rob.S2) on the front with a light but fine red boxed "Dobcrofs/P P", having a partly very fine "NEWHAVEN" UDC (showing the routing through this village to Lewes) on the top flap. Unusual combination of marks. Cross Reference : CHILE, SUSSEX (Image)

2071   imageLIVERPOOL - THE RARE BLUE OVAL "AMERICA" MARK (2-DIGIT YEAR TYPE) ON COVER EX U.S.A.; 2 July 1855 E from New York (firm's v. fine oval cachet on front with almost invisible NYPO 5c-claim cds and fine Liverpool h.s. "1/-") to Nottingham having a very fine rare oval-framed Liverpool "AMERICA" in Blue-green (Rob. P3 - only a few recorded in blue-green for 1853-57 - much rarer than in black) nicely placed on the flap (some toning at right) with unusual 2-digit year-date (see Tabeart Supplement p.27, note 1, recording a single example in black, dated 1850). Carried by the Cunard S.S. 'Asia'. An excellent example of this little-used mark which is still "something of an enigma" (Tabeart's words) and may have been used for special purposes. Cross Reference : TRANSATLANTIC MAIL, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LANCASHIRE - LIVERPOOL (Image)

Starting at £ 100

SOLD for £180.00
