Lot 876 - THE FIRST (JAN./FEB. 1840) 1d PINK FORERUNNER ESSAY BY WHITING & WYON - IN BLUE (TYPE E11); Fine example of this rare Jan./Feb. 1840 early 1d Blue oval Essay on thin white paper, cut round and lightly attached to white card at top right; this is the design recorded by Whiting as "Mr Wyon's head and legend; our notion of the engine turned pattern to look well" (Huggins/Wicks, 2021, p.90, plate 82).
