6245 cover imageTransatlantic mail between France and the USA and vice versa - Direct routing, 1 July 1871 - 31 July 1874; 1874 (April 4): Envelope from New York to Paris, a wetted ship wreck cover sent with the 'Amérique' of the French Line, endorsed "Per Amérique", bearing 1870/71 10 c. brown (Scott 161), tied by geometrical Star cancel, "NEW YORK" despatch cds in red and clear octagonal BREST entry cds in blue (April 27) alongside, charged with handstruck '5' décimes due. Non-contract steamship mail had to be paid with 10 cents per 1/2 oz. in the July 1864 rate while the corresponding French rate of July 1871 was 50 centimes per 10 grams. Note: L'Amérique was an unlucky ship. She had been built in 1864 at St. Nazaire as 'Imperatrice Eugenie'. The vessel had been employed for service to Mexico in the late 1860s. Once Emperor Nappleon III abdicated, the ship was renamed 'Atlantique' in 1870. The years later, she was reworked from a sidewheel paddle steamer to a screw propeller. Again she was renamed as 'Amérique' and operated on the Le Havre - New York route of the French LIne. In 14 April 1874, Amerique was abandoned by crew and passengers in full storm at approximately 100 miles of Brest. The pumps had been insufficient to evacuate the water which rushed into the ship resulting in 6 - 8 feet water in the machine room and coal bunkers. The passengers and the crew were rescued by three other ships in short time. Finally, the vessel was located, still afloat, by the English steamers 'Spray' and 'Auburn', towed until Plymouth on 18 April, then returned after repair to Le Havre on 2 May by her own means. The contemporary journal news do not give any information about the mail bags on the 'Amérique', however one has to assume that the mail was still on the vessel when it was towed in to Plymouth. Gironde, sent with the 'Silesia' of the HAPAG Line, endorsed "p. Steamer via England", bearing two single examples each of 1870/71 2 c. brown and 3 c. green (Scott 146+147), the 3 c. adhesives with sheet endings at right, overall fresh examples, some perforation irregularities due to the stamp's position at the edge of the entire, each cancelled by segmented cork cancels, the 2 c. adhesives in addition by "NEW ORLEANS LA." despatch cds in black. Oval PD in red, "NEW YORK PAID JUN 27 / 6" credit cds in red, "LONDON PAID" transit (July 7) cds in red, and CALAIS entry cds (July 9) in black alongside. Note: When the 1857 France-USA postal convention expired at the end of 1869, an interim period without direct convention started which lasted until the end of July 1874. During this period, rates were again determined by a series of France-GB and USA-GB postal treaties. This entire is a scarce use of 10 cents British Mail rate to France prior to its October 1871 publication of this rate, a "Phantom Rate" cover. Effective 1 July 1870 the new Anglo-French postal convention reduced the rate between Great Britain and France to 3 d. per 10 grams, which in turn reduced the Phantom Rate from 12 c. to 10 c. (with a corresponding reduction in credit to GB from 8 c. to 6 c.) (Image 1) (Image 2)
