Orne, bearing a left marginal pair of 1857/61 Franklin 1 c. blue (Scott 24), tied by indistinct "NEW ORLEANS La." cds, French entry cds (April 9) in red, taxed with handstruck "15c" in red. Reverse with crisp "LA FERTÉ-MACÉ" arrival (April 10) cds. Sent with the 'Arabia' of the Cunard line, leaving New York on 27 March, arriving in Queenstown on 7 April. A very fine entire from the beginning of the war, cert. Roumet (2024). Note: Louisiana had left the Union on 26 January 1861 and joined the Confederation on 4 February 1861. Savoie to the French consul in New Orleans, bearing an 1859 Napoléon imperf. 80 c. rose (Yvert 17B), tied by clear Petits Chiffres '4225' numeral, matching "MOUTIERS - TARENTAISE" cds, framed APRES LE DEPART" as well as framed PD in red alongside. The cover made its journey with the 'Jura' of the Allan line from Liverpool on 20 March, arriving in Portland on 31 March 1862. Clear "PORTLAND ME / APR 1 / PAID 15" credit cds of the exchange office and "Br. Service" octagonal handstamp, both in red on front, the cover diverted with strike of "DEAD LETTER OFFICE / P. O. Dpt / MAY 6" oval datestamp on back (day of release). Note: New Orleans was taken by U.S. Army forces on 25 April 1862. This letter had arrived at the beginning of April 1862 in Portland and went to the Dead Letter Office until 6 May 1862 when postal connections were finally resumed in June or maybe a little bit earlier due to the important receiver (Image 1) (Image 2)

Envelope with original enclosure from General Gustave Paul Cluseret datelined from New Orleans, La. and signed M. Brady photo of the General (hence double rate). Sealed cover tear at top, sent by 'Edinburgh' of the Inman Line departing New York on 7 February and arriving in Queenstown on 19 February 1863. Note: Gustave Paul Cluseret (1823-1900) was a colourful French soldier and politician who served as a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Cluseret was finally forced to relinquish command in the second week of January 1863, but did not formally resign his commission until March of that year, this being the period to which this envelope belongs. 6220 cover imageTransatlantic mail between France and the USA and vice versa - The American Civil War & Blockade Runners; 1863 (May 22): Small cover from the Burckmyer correspondence to Paris, enclosure datelined at Charleston, carried from Wilmington by blockade runner Banshee (I) on June 4, 1863, "NASSAU PAID JU 8 63" circular datestamp in red and prepaid by forwarder 1 shilling 4p (1p in blue crayon retained by Nassau post office), "Too Late" notation in same blue crayon indicating the June sailing for New York had already left, therefore carried by Cunard branch line 'Corsica' to New York and then on 'China' of the Cunard line on July 17, arriving in Queenstown July 25, LONDON July 27 transit, and bold CALAIS entry datestamp of July 27. Minor edge nicks, nevertheless a very fine blockade-run cover. Note: The Banshee (I) made seven round trip voyages between the Bahamas or Bermuda and Wilmington before she was captured by the U.S.S. 6223 cover imageTransatlantic mail between France and the USA and vice versa - The American Civil War; 1864 (June 4, datelined): Small cover with original letter addressed to Captain Burckmyer at Charleston from his wife in Tours, endorsed "Kindness of Major Pierson", letter no. 45 with the usual cross-written content, handcarried by Mrs. Bruckmyer's neighbour, Major Pierson, a Frenchman serving in the Confederate Army via Halifax to Bermuda where loaded onto blockade runner 'Coquette', arrived Wilmington and hand carried to Richmond where Major Pierson, having checked into the Spotswood Hotel, posted the letter with CSA 10 c. blue, Die B (Scott CSA 12) on back, tied by "RICHMOND Va. JUL 15" circular datestamp. A very fine incoming blockade-run cover from the Burckmyer correspondence and a rare use with the 10c General Issue stamp paying the postage to its destination. The cover avoided Paris during the Commune de Paris and was sent to ST. NAZAIRE (April 30), "*FR* / 2F" oval accountacy handstamp, red LONDON transit backstamp (May 8), carried on 'Weser II' of the North German Lloyd, departing Southampton 9 May and arriving New York on 19 May, manuscript "38" cents GB debit to U.S. crossed out and manuscript "47" cents due in U.S. notes (42 c. in coin). A most attractive item full of postal history in the aftermath of the Franco-Prussian War, in addition a very rare transatlantic cover showing the usage of an 1870 Bordeaux Issue adhesive.
