PKt. AUG 8" exchange backstamp and framed "Short Paid" handstamp alongside, all in black. "ÉTATS UNIS / SERV. BR. A. C." entry datestamp (Aug 22) and French '24' due for a cover paid correctly in the first weight but being actually a triple rate ('16' grams noted at top left) with the United States debiting three-times the 3-cent American share. Sent with the 'Canada' from Boston to Queenstown (Aug 8-20, 1860). A most attractive three-colour franking. 'Vesuvius', endorsed "par packet Anglais", bearing 1859 Napoléon imperf. 80 c. rose (Yvert 17B), margins good to huge, tied by Gros Chiffres '532'' numeral, matching BORDEAUX despatch cds in the same black ink, framed PD and "Br. Service" in red, and "BOSTON OCT 21 / PAID 15" credit exchange cds in red (month slug inverted) alongside. Note: On its westbound voyage 'Africa' was disabled off Cape Race and had to go into St. John's, Newfoundland for repairs, arriving there on 13 October. H.M.S. Vesuvius came to her rescue and carried her mails to Boston on 21 October. This is the only case where Cunard mail was transported by a military vessel (Image 1) (Image 2)

6194 cover imageTransatlantic mail between France and the USA and vice versa - The 1857 Postal Convention, HAPAG line; 1869 (July 24): Envelope from San Francisco to Breil nearby Combourg, Dept- Ille-et-Vilaine sent first with the 'Germania', which wrecked and then with the 'Cimbria' of the HAPAG line, endorsed "via Overland", struck by "SAN FRANCISCO" despatch cds. "NEW YORK PAID / AUG 3 / 3" debit exchange cds in red, French CHERBOURG entry cds (Aug 22) and framed PD in the same blue ink alongside. Reverse with COMBOURG arrival cds of the same day. A well preserved wreck cover which escapped wetting, mail to France did not get any indication of the accident. Some documentation included. Note: The 'Germania' left New York on 3 August 1869. On 7 August near Cape Race, Newfoundland she encountered dense fog and went ashore on the rocks at Cap Race in Trepassy Bay. All passengers and crew were saved and brought to St. John's. The mails were later saved, although damaged by sea water. The 'Cimbria' on its eastbound route called at St. John's on 14 August for the 'Germania' crew, passengers and mail (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)
