Martin & Co. with "JBF Arrivet Panama" backstamp, "PANAMA SP 22 1851" datestamp of the British office, carried to London with transit cds and "COLONIES / &c ART. 13" Anglo-French accountancy handstamp, "ANGL. CALAIS" entry datestamp with "15" decimes due (10 decimes to Great Britain), "LE HAVRE" arrival backstamp (Oct 25). A very unusual routing, U.S. postal regulations required eastbound mail from California to be carried by U.S. packets via Panama and New York, only letters forwarded outside the U.S. mails could reach RMSPC steamers at Chagres, from where the 'Thames' could carry it to Southampton via St. Thomas. Southampton", bearing 1853 Napoléon imperf. 80 c. carmine in a horizontal pair (Yvert 17), good to large margins all round, tied by 'D' lozenge in dots, matching PARIS despatch cds and framed "P.P." handstamp in red alongside as well as '20' cents charge upon arrival. Travelled by RMSPC steamer from Southampton to St. Thomas, arriving March 2, then by 'Dee' to Aspinwall, arriving March 7, then by PMSC steamer 'John L. Stephens' from Panama, arriving San Francisco on March 29. French prepayments were reduced to 8 décimes per 7.5 grams to California by Royal Mail Steam Packets via Southampton, St. Thomas and Panama, effective 1 January 1857, little mail travelled by this slower, more expensive route. PKT. PAID APR 22 1867" datestamp of the exchange office, both in red alongside. A rarity sent with the 'Worcester' from Liverpool via Queenstown to Baltimore (April 3-22, 1867). Note: The B&LSSC was a short lasting (1865-1868) American company founded after the Civil War which provided irregular services to southern and western states of the USA. FR. No. 2" cds. Struck alongside by framed "Fr. SERVICE" in blue and octagonal "ÉTATS UNIS / PAQ. FR.H No. 2" shipmail datestamp in red, unexpected as both were designed for incoming eastbound mail, and "BOSTON PAID JUN 18" arrival cds in red. A rare cover as Walske records fewer than ten covers with maritime postmarks and French Anchor cancels from this period. Sent with the 'Pereire' from Le Havre to New York (June 2-17, 1867).
