6099 cover imageTransatlantic mail between France and the USA and vice versa - Cunard line between 24 January - 9 February 1853, 2nd retaliatory rate; 1853 (Jan 13): Entire letter from Paris to New York, sent with the 'Africa' of the Cunard Line, endorsed "via Liverpool per Steamer of 15 January", bearing 1849/50 Cérès 15 c. green (2) and 1 f. carmine (Yvert 2+6), three overall fine and fresh examples with good margins, the 1 franc however touched at left, tied by 'Grille sans Fin' obliterator, PARIS despatch cds in black, framed PD in red and handstruck '21' cents due in black alongside. The first journey in the 1853 retaliatory rate, this 'Africa' journey lasted from January 15-30, 1853 between Liverpool and New York. An attractive entire, signed Calves; cert. Brun (1991). Note: The U.S. Post Office Department, unaware that the continued discriminatory rates charged on American Packet mail to France after the 1848 treaty were rescinded in Sep. 1851, briefly charged retaliatory packet postage of 16c (plus the normal 5c) on mail to France via British Packets, this lasted only from 24 January to 9 February, 1853 (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image 4)

British Steamer", bearing 1851/56 5 c. red-brown (Scott 12), good to huge margins, tied by clear "NEW ORLEANS La" despatch cds, reverse with "BOSTON Br. PKt 25 MAR" transit cds, obverse with Anglo-French "GB / 1F60C" accountancy handstamp and corresponding French handstruck '16' décimes due for a double-rate cover, partially overstruck by French "ANGL. / AMB. CALAIS" entry (April 7) cds. Reverse with London transit and PARIS arrival datestamps. This 'America' voyage lasted from March 25 - April 6, 1857 between Boston and Le Havre. Note: For the short period of three months from January to March 1857, the single rate letter up to 7.5 gram had to be paid with 80 centimes if sent with a British vessel, a rate which came into force for all packets, be it British or American from April 1857. MAY 18" arrival datestamp with the month slug inverted, taxed there with handstruck '10' cents. Reverse with French ambulant and part strike of " .. PACKET BOSTON 11 APR" datestamp of the exchange office. This envelope was first sent with the 'Niagara' from Liverpool to Boston (March 28 - April 11), then with the'George Law' from New York to Apinwall / Colon (April 20-30), and finally with the ''John L. Stephen's' from Panama to San Francisco (May 2-15). A most interesting westbound cover to California. Note1: For the short period of three months from January to March 1857, the single rate letter up to 7.5 gram had to be paid with 80 centimes if sent with a British vessel, a rate which came into force for all packets, be it British or American from April 1857. Note 2: The cover is directed to Clara Stierlin (1834-1904), the wife of Conrad Christopher Stierlin (1828-1900) originating from Schaffhausen, Switzerland who came to California during the gold rush (Image 1) (Image 2)

Reverse with "LIGNE-DU-HAVRE ambulant, PARIS tranit in blue and COGNAC arrival (June 20) cds. This 'Washington' journey lasted from June 1-13, 1847 between New York and Southampton. Note: Sent on first Ocean Line sailing for the new American Packet service, running via Southampton to Bremerhaven.
