6089 cover imageTransatlantic mail between France and the USA and vice versa - Cunard line between 1st August 1849 - 30 July 1851; 1851 (Feb 18): Entire letter from Roxbury Massachusetts to Paris with the 'Africa' of the Cunard Line, endorsed "Per Steamer Feby 19th via N. York", the obverse struck by perfect "ROXBURY MASS." despatch cds and matching PAID handstamp in same blue ink, the datestamp showing manuscript "5" cents prepayment of the British open mail rate by British packet. In New York, a clear strike of the extremely rare two-line "U.S. STEAMSHIP / POSTAGE NOT PAID", overstruck by framed British "COLONIES & c. ART. 13." accountancy handstamp and French "ANGL. CALAIS" entry (March 11) cds, all these in different shades of red. Reverse with London transit cds in red and PARIS arrival (March 11) cds in black. A most appealing usage, presumably the most attractive one of this misleading handstamp, which was used briefly in the months February to October 1851 when letters routed via American Packet were underpaid for the 21 cents rate. This entire was endorsed for for travelling with the 'Washington' of the Ocean Line but made finally its journey with the 'Africa' lasting from February 26 - March 9, 1849 between New York and Liverpool. Reference: An article by Richard F. Winter in Chronicle, vol. 136 (November 1987) describes the rationale behind this handstamp and the three covers known at that time with a strike of it (article accompanying this lot) (Image 1) (Image 2)
