The obverse of the entire struck in addition by "LE HAVRE / LE PORT" despatch cds, framed "P.P." handstamp in red as well as "LONDON PAID" transit cds (Jan 4). Upon arrival in the States struck by SHIP and '6' cents credit handstamps to the States in black. This 'Acadia' journey lasted from October 4-17 between Liverpool and Boston. Note: This entire was sent from James Cox in Paris to Mrs. J. Pinkney Henderson, né Frances Cox. CALAIS" entry cds (June 12), all in red, reverse with London and PARIS transit as well as REIMS arrival (June 13) cds's. This 'Britannia' journey lasted from May 16 to June 9 between Boston and Liverpool. Note: The long duration of this journey was due to an accident of the 'Britannia' when entering the harbour of Halifax on 18 May 1841. It was brought to St. John's, New Brunswick to be repaired. 6064 cover imageTransatlantic mail between France and the USA and vice versa - Cunard line between 1st July 1840 and 31 May 1843; 1842 (March 16): Entire letter from New York to Le Havre, first with the 'Unicorn' to Halifax, then with the 'Columbia' from Halifax to Liverpool, both of the Cunard Line, endorsed "p Steamer", obverse with "NEW ORLEANS Ls" despatch cds in blue as well as British framed "PACKET LETTER" and French "ANGL. CALAIS" entry cds (April 22), both in red, reverse with London and "LE HAVRE" arrival (April 23) cds's. This combined journey lasted from April 2-20 between Boston and Liverpool. Note. On the journey towards the USA, the 'Columbia' broke a shaft and had to proceed under canvas for the rest of the journey to Halifax. There the onward mail to Boston was transported by the 'Unicorn', a vessel of the Cunard Quebec-Pictou feeder line to its destination. On 2 April the 'Unicorn' returned with the mail from Boston and met there the 'Columbia' which took over the mail towards Liverpool making this journey again under canvas as her disabled machine could not be repaired in Halifax (Image 1) (Image 2)

Arcadia via Boston", bearing Postmaster's Provisional New York N.Y. 5 c. black, "ACM" Initials (Scott 9X1), two single examples from positions 7 and 9 with full even margins all around, affixed slightly overlapping and uncancelled in New York, tied by faint French "ANGL. BOULOGNE" entry cds (Jan 18, 1846) in red, PAID in arc handstamp and framed "COLONES & c. ART. 12." accountancy handstamp, both in red alongside. Reverse with indistinct London transit cds in red. The addressee's name eradicated and also cut out of the letter salutation, nevertheless a very rare transatlantic usage of a Postmaster's Provisional. This 'Acadia' journey lasted from January 1-15, 1846 between Boston and Liverpool. Loire inférieure with the 'Caledonia' of the Cunard Line, endorsed "Paid 10", struck in the center by the fancy "WATERLOO LA" handstamp with manuscript "Dec 3", overstruck in part by British "COLONIES & c. ART. 13." accountancy handstamp, and this again overstruck by French "ANGL. BOULOGNE" entry cds (Jan 2, 47), all in different shades of red. Reverse with London transit (Dec 31) in red and NANTES arrival Jan 4) cds's. An exceptional provenance for this Cunard entire, Waterloo being a town at the False River NW of Baton Rouge with importance in Cotton and sugar cane export but abandoned after a severe flood in 1884. Only few examples recorded of this Louisiana fancy town handstamp. This 'Caledonia' journey lasted from December 16-30 between Boston and Liverpool. Note: The present entire is from he same correspondence like the letter offered in the Robert Siegel sale 1171 in December 2017 as lot 190 (Image 1) (Image 2)
