Ambulants stations such as ALBENS & GRESY-S-AIX, Cursives such as Beaufort, cogwheel type 22/25 cds such as BOEGE, LA BALME & MARIGNIER; PC du GC '4211' of CLUSES, '4216' of FRANGY, and '4223' of MONTMEILLAN, some with OR in circle alongside, 1879 registered wrapper of the court in Chambery but returned; but also late use of the Sardinian mute obliterator on Napoléon imperf with matching Sardinian cds alongside in August 1860. 5162 cover image1811 (July 18): Entire letter from Marseille to the French Consul in Boston, with handstruck "SHIP", with BALTIMORE arrival cds (Oct 16) both in red with manuscript "22" cents due (landing fee 2 cents + Baltimore to Boston 20 c.). Fascinating letter from a French woman endeavouring to find out what had happened to her husband, who had been in the Rebellion in Santo Domingo in 1801-1802, the last letter she had received from him was dated "21 fructidor de l'an 10" (8 September 1802), his last letter was written from his home "habitation a Port Platte partie Espagnole" (living in the Spanish port of Puerto Plata) and that the French Consul in Havana had stated that her husband was "mort sur son habitacion à la Port-Platte" (dead in his house at Puerto Plata) (Image 1) (Image 2)

5164 cover image1849: Cérès 20 c. black, two horizontal strips of four, used on 1850 double rate cover to Exeter, Devon, margins good to shaved, all tied by grill obliterators in black. The initial franking was a single strip of four applied at the top of the cover with framed "PD" applied, however the letter was evidently re-weighed as this was deleted by a second strike. Second strip applied over the "PD's" and a further "PD" then applied at left in red. Versailles despatch cds (April 1) in black and London "Paid" cds of transit in red all on obverse; reverse with Paris transit and Exeter arrival (April 3) in blue. Carried at 7 franc rate on the "Scandinavian", with "St. John's / Newfoundland" arrival cds (Aug 21). Closed repairable cover tear at base of cover otherwise a spectacular and very rare cover to a most unusual destination. Note: In 1873 the Allan Line advertised that for nine months of the year their packets would be calling at St. John's, Newfoundland and Halifax, Nova Scotia, this being the first year of this newly established route (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)
