7096 cover imageRussian P.O. in Alexandria 1871 (April 3): Letter sheet from Alexandria via Alexandretta to Aleppo, bearing two single examples of 1868 1 kop. brown and 5 kop. blue each, both perf. 11½, tied by lightest strikes of rhomboid numeral '785' of Alexandria in blue, there or at a later office cancelled in addition by pen strikes. On reverse of entire a matching very rare "ALEKSANDRIISKOE AGENTSTVO ROPiT 3 APR 1870" large sized despatch cds with inverted year slug (Tchilinghirian fig. 838) and transit "PORT ALEXANDRETTA" cds (Tchilinghirian fig. 799), both in blue. The residual journey was paid by the receiver, on reverse five adhesives of 2 pi., 20 pa. (3) and 10 pa. were tied by triple framed Arabic HALEP handstamp with double circle bilingual ALEP (April 24, 1870) struck adjacent. An interesting and attractive double rate cover with part pre-payment, sent from Egypt to Alexandretta with ROPiT vessels, then by Turkish post to its receiver. Provenance: Collection Col. J.R. 7097 cover imageRussian P.O. in Port Said 1870 (March 6): Entire letter from Port Said to Beirut, struck by "PORT-SAID" despatch cds (Tchilinghirian fig 261) in blue, reverse two "PORT BEIRUT" (Tchilinghirian fig 217) arrival cds's of March 11. A rare entire opened up for presentation, the top left corner cut away, nevertheless a most interesting usage at the post office in Port Said. Note: Port Said is the Mediterranean entrance to the Suez Canal, inaugurated in 1869. A Russian PO was opened there in 1867 and Port Said became a regular port of call for several Russian shipping lines. The Russian PO’s in Alexandria and Port Said were closed on 1 October 1875. 90147 image1891: Government Notice (203 x 165 mm.) authorising the provisional surcharges on 1st January 1891, the illustrative diagram square un-printed (unlike the example in Bunt collection) to show how the stamps were to be cut, bearing both halves of the ½ d. on 1 d. claret at lower left; the Notice has been signed by Fred Sheddon Sanguinetti at lower right in his role as Acting Postmaster. Folded as all these Notices are, this example not being folded near the two adhesives. An exceedingly rare sheet with just three recorded. Note: The example in the Bunt collection was missing one bisected stamp, the example in the Ayre collection had full copies of the stamps un-bisected and cancelled by the "F1" obliterator.
