3016 * image1914: Printed in Melbourne, Plate Proof of the 1 d. value in carmine, printed on pink tinted paper with wmk. Crown over A, single line perf., very fresh bright colour, positioned right, although retains its beauty. Scarce; just two pairs and one single example are known to exist. BW 70PP(5) = $ 2'500. Ref: Illustrated in 'The Australian Commonwealth Specialists' Catalogue, King George V, Brusden White, pg. 58 sixth edition 2022'. Note: These were prepared by the contractor who manufactured the OS puncturing head. Originally reported in the 1930s, they were used to check the alignment of the perforation pins for the OS equipment. In the 1950s Chief Engineer at Wiggins Teape, Shoalhaven, NSW stated; "It was used solely by the toolroom mechanics, and similar papers are used all over the Western World as part of a standard process, ceasing with the introduction of photogravure and litho printing. Such trial papers used by the tool-shop are always pink." (Image 1) (Image 2)

Although this item has a certificate of genuineness from the American Philatelic Expertizing Service (1995) it appears to be printed by a photocopier. Nonetheless, an intriguing and fascinating item. 3023 imageThe original plate plan sent from Australia to Perkins Bacon for the design layout of the printing plates; mentioned in the letter dated 25th February 1914 sent from the Department of the Treasury Melbourne to The Official Secretary London, who received it on the 26th of March 1914. It states: "The attached sheet of paper is forwarded for transmission to Messrs. Perkins Bacon and Company London. The sheet shows the approximate size of the panes of 60 of the new King's head stamp plates to be made by Messrs. Perkins Bacon and Company, and more particularly the margin to be left on the completed electro from the edge of the printing to that of the electro. The places in the margin marked "This part is to be cut out" is intended to allow for the insertion of a cutter which is used to facilitate the perforating." (Signed) George Allen, Secretary to the Treasury. The layout is a to scale drawing showing the position of all 4 plates with descriptions for margin dimensions and areas where the margins are to be cut away for insertion of printing plugs to aid perforation. While the significance of this item cannot be overstated, being some 110 years old it is very fragile. Where the layout was historically folded and on the margins of the tape reinforcement, the paper is cracking and separating. May benefit being submitted to a paper conservator for restoration. Provenance: ex Perkins Bacon archives, purchased by Nissen in 1935; Collection Alex Davidson; Josh Gregson private treaty sales of Alex Davidson material in 1988; David Terrington via the Gregson private treaty sales of Davidson's material in 1988 (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image 4) (Image 5) (Image 6) (Image 7) (Image 8)
