HAMBURG and BASEL transit as well as LUZERN arrival (Nov 7) backstamps. A most attractive franking overpaying the double rate of 51 skilling by 1 skilling, a rate in force from 15 July 1854 to 31 July 1865, noted at base with ’34 / 17’ for the rate abroad and for Denmark, respectively. One 4 skilling stamp with minute surface irregularity of no importance, the only cover with this rate, in addition highly attractive. Reverse with transit datestamps in HAMBURG of the Danish and Thurn & Taxis post offices as well as indistinct ROMA arrival cds. The rate to the Papal States via Austria was 30 skilling between 15 July 1854 and 29 April 1859 with the present 4 skilling prepaying the rate to Hamburg. Therefore, struck by 'Insufficiente' handstamp in red, '21' skilling debit charged to the Papal postal administration. An item with most appealing overall appearance and with an impressive pedigree matching its significance. One of two recorded partly prepaid 30 sk. letters to Papal States. Cert. Reverse with transit datestamps in HAMBURG of the Danish and Thurn & Taxis post offices as well as arrival (May 1) cds in red. The rate to the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies via France was 45 skilling in the years 1858 to 1861 with the precise dates unclear. Reverse with KIEL - HAMBURG TPO, VERONA transit and VICENZA arrival (Aug 19) cds. Rare rate for printed matter to the Kingdom of Italy in force between 1 October 1867 and 31 August 1869, this item being the only recorded example of this 5 skilling rate and one of only two recorded printed matters sent to Italy in the skilling period. Note: Italy is the most “exotic” destination to which a Danish printed matter has been recorded sent to in the skilling period. In addition, the wrapper is related to an early scientific Archeology conference in Copenhagen taking place 27 August 1869. 1646 cover imagePostal routes to Egypt; 1861 (Jan 28): Envelope from Lyngby to the Danish consulate in Alexandria, opened up for display, bearing 1858 wavy spandrels 4 sk. brown and a corner marginal horizontal strip of four 8 sk. green from pos. 97-100, this multiple with large margins, the leftmost stamp folded over the edge of the cover, the 2 skilling cut into on two sides, all tied by '39' numeral with matching LYNGBY despatch cds and framed "Aus Dänemark" alongside. Reverse with HAMBURG datestamps of the Stadtpost and Thurn & Taxis offices as well as handstruck '15' kreuzer credit of the Austrian Levant and ALEXANDRIEN arrival (Feb 16) cds in blue. The rate for letters from Denmark to Egypt via Hamburg was 36 skilling between 15 July 1854 and November 1863. An item full of postal history with a most appealing overall appearance. The only recorded Danish skilling cover with imperforate stamps sent to Egypt, the only recorded example of the 36 sk. rate, and one of two recorded Danish skilling covers sent to Egypt. The large margined strip of four combined with the exceptional destination makes it one of the best covers recorded with this issue, presumably the greatest Danish skilling cover to the African continent. Brevsæk" (with direct Danish-British mailbag), bearing 1864 oval type comb perforated 4 sk. red print 12, 8 sk. brown type 2, and pair 16 sk. olive print 3 (AFA 13+14+15), the adhesives in far above average condition for an 1864 franking, all tied by '77' numeral with matching VIBORG despatch cds alongside. Reverse with FREDERICA transit cds and oval "SEA POST OFFICE" (Sept 2) datestamp in bluish black as well as CALCUTTA arrival (Sept 12) cds in red, a local "1d" charge in the same ink on front. The rate for letters from Denmark to British India with direct Danish-British mailbag was 44 skilling between 1 March 1868 and November 1870. The overall appearance is among the very best Danish letters sent to a tropical destination in the skilling period. This cover was only discovered around 2005, and therefore has only a short pedigree not reflecting its rarity and quality. One of only two recorded Danish skilling cover sent to India and in addition the only recorded example of this India rate. Cert. Nielsen (2005). 1648 cover imagePostal routes to Hong Kong, China; 1870 (Dec 12): Envelope from Nestved to a crew member of the Danish frigate 'Tordenskiold' care of the Danish Consul in Hong Kong, endorsed "via Triest" and sent further with the P&O China Line via Galle, Penang and Singapore, bearing 1864 oval type comb perf. 16 sk. olive print 3, two single examples in combination with 1870 oval type line perf. 2 sk. blue print 7, and 1870 bi-coloured 4 sk. grey & carmine perf. 12½ (AFA 15+11A+18A), the adhesives with perforation irregularities, the 2 sk. adhesive torn pre-use, cancelled / tied by '44' numeral with matching NESTVED despatch cds alongside. Reverse with German WAMDRUP - FLENSBURG TPO and double-circle "SINGAPORE TO HONG-KONG / MARINE SORTER" (Feb 5/12, 1871) datestamp. The rate to Hong Kong via Trieste was 38 sk. being in force from 11 June 1868 to 31 December 1874. The cover tropicalized, however one of only five recorded Danish skilling covers to Hong Kong. The Danish 1,453 tons fregate 'Tordenskiold' armed with 60 canons was sold in 1871 to Asia and was later used as a trade vessel. She was lost in the Atlantic in 1892. Cert. Møller (1998). Reverse with "37-KORSØR" duplex and MARSEILLE transit datestamps as well as "AUCKLAND / NEW ZEALAND" arrival (June 12) cds. Envelope stained and missing upper left corner. The 36 sk. franking paid the rate to New Zealand via France in force between 1 February 1868 and 31 December 1874. PKT." cds of the exchange office alongside. Reverse with Danish TPO cds and datestamp of the Danish PO in HAMBURG. The rate for first weight letters from the second Danish Rayon to the USA via Prussia in a closed mailbag was 64 sk. between 15 July 1854 and 31 July 1865. The US debit to Prussia was calculated to be '32' cents noted in blue crayon plus 3 cents US inland postage resulting in '35' cents handstruck at top left to be paid by the receiver. A cover with some edge faults and two minor ballpont pen notes, nevertheless a rare part paid entire full of character and postal history content. Cert. Paaskesen (1997). Reverse with KIEL - HAMBURG TPO datestamp, two HAMBURG cds's, one of them of the Stadtpost in blue and framed BREMEN transit datestamp. '6½' silbergroschen in red crayon indicate the total foreign postage beyond Denmark and the framed "PAID 10" (cents) handstamp in red indicate the credit to the USA paying seapost and inland postage. The rate for first weight letters to DWI via Hamburg and the United Kingdom was 48 sk. from 1 January 1863 to 31 March 1863 with the Danish share 9 sk. and foreign share of 9¼ sgr. equal to 39 sk. noted in red crayon at bottom left. The rightmost stamp toned but all adhesives large margined. The cover with tear and wear not impairing the franking, receiver's name erased, still in very fine condition for a cover with Danish imperforate stamps to the DWI. An exceptional item full of postal history with a rate being in force for only three months, the only recorded letter to DWI sent via this route, the only recorded item showing the 48 skilling rate. 1655 cover imagePostal routes to the Danish West Indies; 1873 (Dec 28): Triple rate Cover in closed Danish-British mailbag to St. Croix, DWI, endorsed "via Southampton", bearing 1870/71 bi-coloured 2 sk. grey & blue, 3 sk. grey & lilac, and 16 sk. grey & green, all comb. perf. 14x13½ in combination with 48 sk. brown & lilac line perf. 12½ in a strip of three, tied by KJØBENHAVN despatch cds, "LONDON PAID" transit datestamp in red alongside. The rate in the third weight to DWI via Southapton was three times 55 sk. equal to 165 sk. in force between 1 November 1865 and 31 December 1874. As always, the 48 sk. adhesives faded and the cover with a horizontal fold far away from the franking. However, the only recorded third weight Danish skilling letter to DWI. Cert. Møller (2012).
