1634 cover imagePostal routes to France; 1864 (March 28): Entire letter from Copenhagen to Dunkerque, bearing 1854 dotted spandrels 8 sk. green in a strip of three, good to large margins all round, small fault at top left, tied by '1’ numeral, matching KIØBENHAVN cds and red "P.D." in circle alongside as well as French "TOUR-T. LILLE" entry cds in red. Reverse with two LUEBECK transit cds's, one from the Stadtpost, the other from the Thurn & Taxis post office as well as LILLE transit and DUNKERQUE arrival (April 1) cds's. Despatched shortly after the beginning of the Danish-Prussian War with the normal rate to Dunkerque being 28 sk. between 1 April 1862 and 31 July 1865, but this letter seems to have been sent by private ship to Lübeck and re-posted at the Stadt Post Office in Lübeck due to the war. The P.D. strike and the lack of a postage due charge suggests that this letter was actually considered fully prepaid by the 24 sk., however this letter deserves some extra archival research to figure out the correct rate description. An attractive and intriguing cover with a significant pedigree, certs. Møller (2002), Nielsen (2004). 1635 cover imagePostal routes to France; 1867 (Aug 26): Triple rate Envelope from Copenhagen to Bordeaux, bearing 1858 wavy spandrels 8 sk. green in combination with two 1864 oval type 3 sk. print 2 and two 16 sk. print 1 (AFA 8+12+15), the 8 sk. adhesive with large margins, several stamps with perforation imperfections, tied by '181 - SJAELL. JB.P.SP.’ railway duplex datestamp, "P.D." in red and French "PRUSSE ERQUELINES" entry cds in blue alongside. Reverse with Prussian and French TPO's, PARIS transit and BORDEAUX arrival (Aug 29) cds's. As Denmark and France used different weight increments, the resulting rates being in force from 1 August 1865 to 31 January 1868 were difficult with 23 skilling for the first weight up to 7.5 grams; 34 skilling for the second weight of 7.5-15 grams; and 57 skilling for the third weight of 15-22.5 grams. This letter is franked with 46 sk., which is twice the first weight rate. Probably the sender or the postal cleck forgot that the weight progressions for the non-French and French parts were different and that higher weight class rates were not simple multiples of the first weight rate. Due to the PD handstamp not taxed in France, an interesting cover with a nice overall appearance. Cert. Møller (2012). Provenance: Postiljonen sale 201, lot 682 (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)
