1578 cover imagePostal Routes to Norway; 1864 (Nov 2): Entire letter from Copenhagen to Christiania, franked and intended for direct Shipmail to Norway, finally transported overland via Sweden, bearing 1863 16 sk. lilac rouletted in combination with 1864 oval type 4 sk. carmine (AFA 10+13a), two fresh examples, some perforation irregularities just mentioned for accuracy, cancelled by '1' numeral with matching KIØBENHAVN despatch cds alongside, SVINESUND backstamp. Presumably intended and paid for the last direct steamer to Norway, it had to use in November the Swedish overland route underpaying the 24 skilling rate in force between 15 July 1854 and 30 September 1865. Therefore, it was taxed with Swedish '5' skilling specie noted in red crayon. Some cover patina, nevertheless a very fine and appealing entire full of postal history, cert. Møller (2005). Kronprindsesse Louise" steamer, bearing a three-colour franking of 1857 dotted spandrels 8 sk. green in combination with 1864 oval type 4 sk. red with the perforation cut away, a so called 'artighedsklippet', glued over a strip of three 16 sk. olive with its original 13x12½ comb perforation (AFA 5+13+15 / Facit 5+13+15), overall fresh examples, the 8 sk. cut into at right, one 16 sk. with corner fault just mentioned for accuracy, cancelled by '1' numeral with matching "KIØBENHAVN OPE" cds in blue alongside, reverse with SANDØSUND transit cds of the next day. The triple ship fee of '12' skilling noted in red crayon on front, a cover in the summer Shipmail rate to Norway of three times 20 skilling in force between 26 March 1860 and 30 September 1865. 1586 cover imagePostal Routes to the GAPU, Bergedorf; 1854 (May 7): Entire letter from Lütau nearby Lauenburg to Bergedorf, from the 1st Danish into the 1st GAPU rayon, bearing 4 RBS Thiele red-brown from plate II (AFA 1//II / Facit 2), a fresh and fine example in a deep vivid shade with even large margins, tied by '148' numeral with matching LAUENBURG despatch cds alongside, date adjusted in manuscript, BERGEDORF backstamp in red from the same day. The Duchy of Lauenburg had its own postal agreements with Bergedorf which had been in force from 1 October 1851 to 30 September 1857 and where Danish stamps could be used from February 1854 to pay the Danish postage to the border of Bergedorf, for the journey beyond the receiver had to pay '½' schilling courant due noted in red crayon. One of only three recorded examples of this rate combination, in addition a very rare usage with 4 RBS to foreign destinations, especially before 15 July 1854, when the usage of stamps sent outside of the Danish postal territory became generally allowed. 1587A cover imageGerman-Danish War, former Danish Post Office in Hamburg; 1864 (Feb 24): Entire letter from Hamburg to Preetz in Holstein, bearing 1863 4 sk. brown rouletted, a fine and freshexample, tied by '2' numeral with matching "............ HAMBURG" despatch, the rare type with the left part 'K.D.O.P.A.' omitted. The lot includes a pre-war usage with the "K.D.O.P.A. HAMBURG" datestamp. Note: From 23 February 1864 the postmark of the Danish Post Office in Hamburg was 'adapted' by omitting the 'K.D.O.P.A.' part pointing to its former function. As Danish postage stamps could still be used until 29 February 1864, the combination of Danish stamps obliterated by the '2' numeral in combination with the 'adapted' HAMBURG cds was possible for only seven days. The 'adapted' datestamp was in use together with adhesives of Schleswig-Holstein until August 1865. The '2' numeral was used as obliterator until 5 March 1865 (Image 1) (Image 2)

HAMBURG", HAMBURG BAHNHOF" and "BAHNHOF HAGENOW" transit backstamps. Cover tear at base, nevertheless a fine cover correctly franked with 8 skilling or 1¾ silbergroschen between the two first rayons, a rate in force between 15 July 1854 and 29 February 1864. The share of '¾' silbergroschen for Mecklenburg was noted in red crayon on lower left. Note: The Postal convention between Denmark and the German Austrian Postal Union (GAPU) becoming valid on 15 July 1854 defined postal rayons, two in Denmark, in addition the usual three GAPU rayons, being the basis for a rate system defined by weight and distance. For each rayon be it Denmark or GAPU, a postage of 1 silbergroschen had to be paid. From March 1861, Denmark and Mecklenburg agreed to extend the respective rayon 1 by adding several cities in north-eastern Holstein including Kiel as well as the complete area of the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin and the Duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. 1590 bof imagePostal Routes to the GAPU, Mecklenburg-Strelitz; 1861ca (Feb 14): Part Cover from Randers to Friedland, Mecklenburg-Strelitz, from the 2nd Danish into the 1st GAPU rayon, originally sent as double rate letter, bearing a spectacular block of six of 1858 wavy spandrels 4 sk. brown, a fresh multiple in a deep vivid shade with good to large margins, that at top right damaged due to its position nearby the edge, tied by '53' numeral with matching RANDERS despatch cds alongside. Correct franking of twice 12 skilling, a rate in force between 15 July 1854 and 31 July 1865. The share of '1½' silbergroschen for Mecklenburg was noted in red crayon on lower left. Large parts of the back- and sideflaps missing, two archival punches in the envelope made less visible by placing blue paper behind, nevertheless a very attractive item for both the traditional and postal history collector, the only recorded example of the 24 skilling rate. 1591 cover imagePostal routes to the GAPU, Prussia; 1855 (April 25): Entire letter from Copenhagen as part of the famous Heyn correspondence to Danzig, internally dated “Elsineur 24 April 1855”, from the second Danish to the third German rayon, bearing 2 RBS Thiele blue (plate II, type 10, sheet position 50) in combination with a strip of five of the 1854 dotted spandrels 4 sk. brown (print 1, plate II) (AFA 2b+4), fresh and fine examples with good to large margins, tied by ‘1’ numeral with matching KIØBENHAVN datestamp alongside. Reverse with “LUEBECK BAHNHOF” transit (April 26) and Danzig distribution (April 27) cds’s. Handwritten “3/2” indicates the split of the rate of 22 skilling equal to 5 silbergroschen with 3 sgr. for Prussia and 2 sgr. for Denmark, the weiterfranco is noted in addition in red crayon. The 2 RBS was originally issued in May 1851 to exclusively cover the rate for local postage within Copenhagen. From 15 July 1854, the Post allowed the 2 RBS to be used also on mail to foreign destinations. Therefore, for a brief period, the 2 RBS could be used to pay a few foreign letter rates not dividable by 4 skilling. A total of 14 mixed frankings with 2 RBS have been recorded. A fresh, flawless and most attractive entire showing the correct 22 skilling rate using a 2 RBS adhesive, a high-calibre item with an impressive provenance for a most advanced collection of classic Denmark, signed Bloch & A. Diena; certs. Nielsen (2003/2008), Møller (2004). Provenance: Collection H. The Danish stamp tied by ‘113’ numeral with matching double-circle ALTONA datestamp alongside, both adhesives tied by ‘578’ numeral of the Prussian office in Hamburg, matching HAMBURG transit cds on reverse. Framed “Aus Dänemark” and manuscript ‘fr’ (franco) notation showing acceptance of the country combination franking. Delivery backstamp of the following day. The total rate was 17 sk. = 4 sgr. in force from 15 July 1854 - 29 Feb 1864 with the 4 sk. stamp paying the Danish part of the journey and the 3 sgr. stamp the Prussian share. A famous mixed country franking of Denmark and Prussia with only few in existence, showing an impressive provenance, certificate Møller (2004). HAMBURG" backstamp from the same day. The rate for letters from the Danish rayon 2 to the GAPU rayon 3 was 22 sk. in force from 15 July 1854 to 31 July 1865. The 4 sk. adhesive paid the rate to the Danish border. The rest of the rate was re-calculated in 3 ggr. / 5 pf. in Hannover currency, noted in blue ink and charged to the receiver, only two comparable covers recorded. Cert. Møller (2007). One cover despatched on the day of the circular showing the 4 skilling rate to Kiel bearing a rouletted adhesive, the other a cover front from Vejle via Copenhagen to Lübeck showing the new rate with pair 4 sk. rouletted. In addition two covers from the later no-agreement period from Horsens and Jutland, one to Lübeck in December 1864 erroneously taxed and finally showing '2' Schilling courant due, the other from July 1865 to Kiel directly charged with '2' Sch. courant. 1595 imagePostal Routes to the GAPU, Schleswig-Holstein; 1864 (Dec 20): Cover front from Copenhagen to Altona, endorsed "via Lübeck" but sent finally "via Kiel" as indicated by a handstamp in blue, the cover originally in the second weight rate, bearing two single examples of 1864 oval type 4 sk. red comb perforated (AFA 13 / Facit 13), the right adhesive with missing perforations to the right due to its placement on the cover, tied by '1' numeral with matching KIØBENHAVN despatch datestamp alongside. The Holstein Post Authorities allowed private ships to carry mail via Kiel and, from September 1864, they decided to charge 2 Schilling Courant postage due per weight class independent of any franking.
