The Opium Trade 1885 (Oct 31): Eight page document in an Official Foreign Office copy of the letter from Sir Robert Hart to Sir Julian Pauncefote written and dated at Peking. In this letter Hart expresses his reservations and
concerns over the recent negotiations between the British and Chinese Governments concerning the Trade in Opium. Sir Robert's comments can be seen on our website but include the fact that "the July 18, 1885 article concerning Opium was negotiated by
men who know little about Customs affairs (the Marquis Tseng & Sir H. McCartney) and it was only after it was signed that I saw it...". A fascinating and unique document written by Sir Robert Hart who had perhaps the most thorough grasp of
Chinese affairs at this date. Note: Please see our website for further information (Image 1)
