1296 bof imageThird London Printing 1861/62: 20 c. green, wmk. 1, the famous irregular used block of twenty-two, (positions 91-96 / 103-108 / 115-120 / 129-132), with just touched to large margins and showing the marginal rule at right, all cancelled by barred "CANCELLED" handstamps in black. Minor creasing as to be expected. A spectacular and extremely rare multiple, the third largest recorded postally used block. Signed Pröschold. Note: Multiples of this nature paid postage on heavy packages. The stamps were affixed to a separate sheet that accompanied the package, and was retained by the Post Office as Proof of delivery (in much the same way as South American countries receipted the backs of covers upon arrival and delivery to use as proof of receipt). Note: Illustrated in "Chile First Issues of Postage Stamps" by Gerhard Blank on page 35. Provenance: Collection Gerhard Blank, Christie's, Zurich, 5 Dec 1991, lot 1217; collection Dr. Norman Hubbard, Corinphila sale 95, 7 Dec 1996, lot 970 (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)
