1278 **/*/bof imageThird London Printing 1861/62: 1 c. lemon-yellow, an unused block of thirty (10 x 3), with generally large margins all round, top left stamp with slight surface rub otherwise of wonderfully fresh appearance, minor age spots at top on large part, mostly unmounted og. A rare and appealing large multiple Gi 30 = £ 1'400+ / Scott = $ 2'000+. Note: One of the largest recorded multiples, the Joseph Hackmey collection (Corinphila sale 236) contained a block of 69. 1279 cover imageThird London Printing 1861/62: 1 c. lemon-yellow, a fine example with four large to ample margins all round, used on 1867 Torres Rossell & Co. Printed Circular entire letter within Valparaiso, neartly tied by "CANCELLED" obliterator in black with scarce large circular "CORREOS / VALPARAISO CHILE" cds (June 2) in red adjacent. An exceptional entire in the finest quality for such a rarity. Certs. Moorhouse (2001), Philatelic Foundation (2001). Note: Gerhard Blank states, in Chile: First Issues of Postage Stamps on page 22: "At the present time only three printed matter entires franked with the 1 centavo have been recorded". Blank's example was cut-into (lot 1190), and a similar example from this correspondence was in the Hackmey collection (Corinphila sale 228) in November 2018 (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image 4)

A fine single rate usage - 5 c. + 5 c. for ship fee: at this date Ancud was largely a penal colony of the Island of Chiloe in the far South of the country, with a military presence due to fears that European powers would try to gain a foothold on the Straits of Magellan. An exceptional cover from this remote area (Image 1) (Image 2)

1287 cover imageThird London Printing 1861/62: 10 c. bright blue, twelve examples, originally wrapped around a maritime cover from Valparaiso to Salta, Argentina endorsed "Por Vapor Vapeuro i Copiapo" showing all twelve re-entries made by Perkins Bacon to the original 1853 issue, positions 229-240 being the last horizontal row of the sheet (arranged on the cover as illustrated on the album page, see Internet scan), all tied by "Inutil" obliterators in black with VALPARAISO despatch cds (Dec 10), COPIAPO transit in black (Dec 14) and thence via the Straits of Magellan. Some stamps unfortunately showing a few faults but nevertheless an extraordinary usage - 12 re-entries on one cover and the companion piece to the "Re-Enries" collection. Unique (Image 1)

1288 imageThird London Printing 1861/62: 10 c. bright blue, watermark position 4, the error of watermark "20" for "10", a fine used example with three large margins and just shaved at right, struck with the "Cancelled" obliterator in black. An extremely rare stamp with just 8 examples recorded. Cert. RPSL (1980) Gi 32c = £ 3'000 / Scott 12c = $ 5'200. Note: This variety was first reported in "L'Union Postale Universelle" in July 1893. Since that time, just 8 examples have been found. Gerhard Blank states that all the known examples have the watermark, pos. 4, in the identical position, thus all must have emanated from the same sheet. Only one, perhaps two examples have complete margins. Provenance: Collection Dr. Siebert, Köhler sale 332, Wiesbaden, 13-14 March 2008, lot 1796 (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)
