5080 cover image1845 & 1853: Covers (2) with earlier cover from Kandy endorsed "To be sent on board the Steamer when she arrives at Galle", struck on reverse with fine "KANDY / NOT PAID" circular datestamp of despatch in black (Sept 7) and rate "9d." in manuscript; and 1853 cover to Scotland with fine "KANDY / STEAMER LETTER" cds in black (Jan 11), with London transit and thence to Scotland. No side flaps to either cover but fine strikes (Image 1)

5081 cover image1857 (Nov 10): Cover, no side flaps, to Scotland endorsed "per Steamer from Galle via Southampton" struck with very fine circular "BATTICALOA / POST PAID" handstamp in brown with manuscript date "10 Novbre 1851" inserted; and extremely scarce framed "Too Late for the / STEAMER of....." italic handstamp in black with "Hindostan" inserted in manuscript. Reverse with London cds of transit (Jan 20, 1858) in red and Forres arrival cds (Jan 22) in blue where charged "1/-" to pay. Rare. 90137 cover image1872/80: New currency, 24 cents green, vivid colour and perforations mainly fine, tied by duplex “COLOMBO JU 4 78” to a mourning envelope sent to Limla, India, endorsed “per P&O Steamer Via Galle”. Reverse, transit cds “GALLE JU 8 PAID”, “BOMBAY JUN 9” and arrival “DEL LIMLA JUN 13”. One short perf top. Attractive single franking. Scarce transitional rate. Mail to India in this period is not common. Comes with two additional covers, both sent from Colombo, one franked at the same 24c rate (FE 6 78) to Launceston, Cornwall, England via Marseille. Flap missing and edge faults. The other franked at the 48c rate (JA 18 77) sent to London. Scarce Transitional Rate covers with comparable at the previous rate. An exquisite and extremely rare Proof. Note: Perkins Bacon printed 1'250 sheets of the 5 c. value in December 1852. 1168 bof/(*) image1852 (Dec): Perkins Bacon Plate Proof, imperforate on unwatermarked thick toned paper, the extraordinary block of forty-four subjects (11 x 4) printed in black. The block with large even margins all round, tiny marginal tear at right between the third and fourth rows, minor ironed wrinkles not affecting the stunning appearance of such a large multiple - originally the second largest recorded, although this describer believes the larger multiple may now been split and thus this is probably the largest now extant.
