5068 cover image1842: The Cape Frontier Times, Volume III, Graham's Town, Thursday May 12, 1842, No. 106; a used example of this four page Newspaper published from the Cape 'border', with much of the content dominated by the settler's relationship with the "kafirs", but much of interest including the death of Chief Tyali with an announcement from the Lieutenant Governor in order to prevent a rush of settlers trying to steal land, the death of Chief Yalie at Chumie River etc.; together with a list of the salesmen of the Newspaper in the major towns of the Cape; the Newspaper being franked at upper right corner of the first page with 1 d. rose imperforate Newspaper Tax stamp tied by manuscript address "His Grace the Arch. Bishop of Canterbury" with partial London arrival datestamp alongside in red. A rare surviving Newspaper and a rarity in used condition. Note: For a further example of a slightly earlier Cape Frontier Times Newspaper, see the Burrus Collection, RL, London 27 Nov 1962, lot 1, which was originally in the collection of Ferrary who claimed this was the World's first Official stamp as it pre-dated the VR 1d. black. 5069 cover image1842: The Graham's Town Journal or, Cape of Good Hope Eastern Province Register, Vol XI, Thursday, June 30, 1842, no. 552; a similar Newspaper to the previous lot, again much preoccupied with events on the Eastern Border and incursions by the "Kafirs" and thefts of cattle and sheep. Noted articles concerning the Crown's relationship with Boer farmers and their resistance to the British occupation of Natal and much of further interest (see Internet for further details). The Newspaper is franked at upper right corner of the first page with 1 d. rose imperforate Newspaper Tax stamp with "♚ / GENERAL POST OFFICE / CAPE OF GOOD HOPE" datestamp in black (July 12) at left. As with the previous lot, this Newspaper was sent to the Archbishop of Canterbury. A rare surviving Newspaper and a rarity in used condition. 5070 cover image1844 (Oct 16): Entire letter from Graham's Town to Forres, Scotland, carried to Cape Town by the Military courier and endorsed "Pd. 1/4d." at upper right. Oval framed "GENERAL POST OFFICE / CAPE OF GOOD HOPE" datestamp in black; framed "SHIP LETTER / PLYMOUTH" in black on reverse (Robertson fig. S7) and London cds (Dec 26) in red, thence via Edinburgh to Forres with framed arrival (Dec 28), where charged "8d." for Ship Letter fee. Soiled but scarce. Note: The sender, Major Gordon Cumming, of the Cape Mounted Rifleman, mentions that he has been "into the interior to trade with remote Kaffir tribes for cowries, ivory and ostrich feathers; this will enable me to employ my time profitably for a few months, until I am enabled to purchase my farm" (Image 1) (Image 2)

5071 cover image1844 (Oct 31): Entire letter from the Cape of Good Hope to Newark, Nottingham at Military concession rate, endorsed from "Corporal Henry Smith 53rd. Regt." and countersigned by his Commanding Officer at lower left, with handstruck "1" in red and London tombstone datestamp (Jan 9, 1845) and Newark arrival on reverse. Overall staining but scarce. Note: Corporal Henry Smith served in the 53rd Regiment, King's Shropshire Regiment. The regiment fought in the 1st and 2nd Sikh Wars. Smith was wounded at Sobraon, 10 Feb 1846 in the 1st Sikh War and later died of his wounds. This entire letter is largely a commentary on how tedious he found the 76 day journey from England to the Cape (Image 1) (Image 2)

5072 cover image1828 & 1850: Early cover prepaid to Cape Town with manuscript "pp 4d." in red ink and fine "POST OFFICE / CAPE OF GOOD HOPE" oval datestamp in black; second 22 May 1850 entire letter from Port Elizabeth to Billingsgate, London rated "8d." in manuscript to pay for Ship Fee; reverse with "SHIP LETTER" straight line and London cds (Aug 12) - this last with sad contents, a young man writing to his father for funds due to being shipwrecked and losing everything (Image 1)

5073 cover image1859/60: Covers (2) to Portarlington, Ireland with 1859 cover franked by 1853 Perkins Bacon 1 d. red-brown on blued paper in a pair, originally applied around edge of the cover, and oxidised 4 d. deep blue each tied by oval "FORT BEAUFORT" datestamps (July 7) - an extremely rare usage of the datestamp, introduced as a despatch or arrival marking to be applied generally on the reverse - and a second 1860 cover from the same correspondence with 1856/66 6 d. rose-lilac with good to poor margins correctly tied by CGH obliterator and by "Devonport Packet" cds; both with "5" (pence) credit in red crayon. 5077 cover imageTranskei / Basutoland Campaign 1880: Cover fronts (2) and a cover, all addressed to Tonbridge, Kent and endorsed "On Active Service" with 1880 example bearing 1872 1 d. carmine (3) tied by "55" barred numeral obliterator in black, with "UMTATA" cds in black (Dec 3) and thence via Cape Town (Dec 9) - this counter-signed at left by commander of the K.W.T.V. (King William's Town Volunteer Artillery), "Umtata 2/12/80". "3 d." charge deleted by "B16" obliterator on Plymouth TPO and charged "1/3d.", to pay on arrival. Second example with notation of sender at left and cancelled at Umtata bearing single 1 d. carmine and thence via Cape Town; and third cover from Fort Hartley, Basutoland to Tonbridge, Kent with reverse showing QUTHING cds (Jan 19), oval framed Aliwal North (Jan 20) and Cape Town cds (Jan 24). The cover with possibility of stamp removed or fallen off in transit as treated initially as unpaid with "3d." applied, this deleted on the Travelling Post Office from Plymouth to Bristol by "B16" barred obliterator. 5078 cover imageThe Port Elizabeth / Algoa Bay Great Storm 1888 (Aug 30): Entire letter being a huge lithographed print drawn by E. J. Redwood of the storm in Algoa Bay which wrecked nine vessels (Andreas Riis, Dorothea, Wolseley, Drei Emmas, Elizabeth Stevens, Jane Harvey, Lada, Natal and C. Boschetto) showing the Rocket Brigade firing lifelines, lifeboats and crews of other ships helping those at sea. Despite the damage, just one soul was drowned; the large print folded into letter format and franked by 1885 1 d. rose-red tied by Cape Town numeral "1" obliterator in black for the printed matter rate to Reading and endorsed "per. 90214 cover image1882: Hope, 6 pence mauve, in combination with Egypt first issue postage dues 1884, 1 piastre rose-red and 10 para rose red, all fresh colour and perforations mainly fine (1pia overhanging base), the former tied by cds “BARKLY FE 1 85” (Griqualand West) and the latter by cds “CAIRE ARRIVEE 5 MR 85”, to an envelope sent to a solider in Cairo, Egypt, two “T” marks and manuscript “50”, endorsed “To be forwarded”. Reverse, transit cds “LONDON FE 25 85” and indistinct arrival cds. Some imperfections to be expected. Remarkably well preserved. Scarce combination. Note: Incorrectly treated and charged as if it were a letter from within the UPU. Interestingly from a British Officer on the Sir Charles Warren expedition in Griqualand West sent to another officer serving with Suakin Field Forces in Egypt (Sudan Campaign) (Image 1) (Image 2)

90221 cover image1892: formula post card, “1½d” surcharge on 3 pence blue, first printing, good colour, perforations mainly fine, tied by coat of arms with squared circle alongside “BLOEMFONTEIN O.V.S. 12 SEP 92” sent to Crefeld, arrival cds “CREFELD 3 10 92”. Perforations at top dulled due to proximity to edge. Fine. Scarce early use. Comes with an 1889, ½ penny Cape of Good Hope stationery card inbound to Orange Free State from Johannesburg uprated with 1 pence carmine. 539 cover imageMafeking 1900 (April 7): Goodyear 1 d. pale blue on blued horizontally laid paper, a fine used example from base of the sheet of twelve subjects, Plate III, position 34 (10), showing the "Broken Value Tablet" with nine vertical white lines running to the margin, tied to O.H.M.S. envelope used by the Military after the Siege had been lifted, tied by oval framed '87TH BATTERY / ROYAL FIELD ARTILLERY' datestamp (July 6) in violet. The cover is addressed to the 'Officer Commanding, 87th Field (Howitzer) Battery, R.F.A.'. The adhesive with tiny surface scuff, but a magnificent and extremely attractive cover. 288 cover image1857/59: 1 s. dull violett imperforate, wmk Large Star, a fine example with good to large margins, tied by light barred oval to 1860 cover to London, endorsed "via Marseilles", backstamped "COLOMBO / POST PAID" in red (June 26), "LONDON PAID" arrival datestamp on front (Aug 6). Upon arrival the receiver's address crossed out, the cover re-directed to Leamington, Warwickshire with the complete new address noted on the reverse of the cover, franked with 1 d. red-brown lettered QG, tied by oval "LONDON - W28" duplex datestamp with thimble LEAMINGTON arrival (Aug 7) cds in blue alongside. The cover cut along the edge to make the complete obverse and reverse visible for presentation reasons, stabilized from the back. No beauty but a cover full of postal history with a combination of the 1/- rate from Ceylon via Marseilles and a British inland franking (Image 1) (Image 2)
