4231 cover image1863/64: 4 d. blue, a single example (Pos. V 7 A), with good to large margins all round, used on 1864 cover to Preston Pans, Scotland endorsed "Per Steamer Eastern Province", tied by triangular CGH obliterator in black. Reverse with oval framed "SOMERSET EAST" despatch (June 18) in black, CAPE TOWN transit in red (June 19), and 'London / Paid' cds in red (July 31), Edinburgh cds and Preston Pans arrival (Aug 2). manuscript "2d." credit to Cape of Good Hope in red ink. An extremely rare cover - this being the Maiden Return Voyage of the Diamond Line Shipping Company. Note: The Diamond Line Shipping Co. submitted a tender for the Cape Mail service in December of 1862. Whilst their bid of £ 9'000 per annum was cheaper than that of the Union Line Steam Shipping Co., it was turned down as the ships had yet to be constructed and a seven year contract was awarded to the Union Line. On 25 May 1864, the "Eastern Province" arrived in Algoa Bay after a journey of 32½ days, some 2½ days faster than a Union line vessel. As terms were not agreed with the Cape Legislative Assembly, Diamond Line Mail was carried at the private ship rate of 4d. per ½ ounce prepaid with the Cape credited 2d (Image 1) (Image 2)
