4205 cover image1864: 1 d. deep carmine-red, a used example with two good margins and touched at left, tied to local 1864 cover addressed to Miss Maclear, tied by oval barred '1' numeral obliterator with CAPE TOWN / CAPE COLONY datestamp (Sept 13) alongside. Miss Maclear was the daughter of Sir Thomas Maclear (1974-1879) who ran the Astronomical Royal Observatory at the Cape. The reverse of the envelope bears the embossed seal of the "2nd Batallion of the 10th North Lincolnshire Regiment, Egypt". A most attractive and rare cover carried at the newly introduced (February 1, 1864) expanded local rate of 1 d. serving the suburbs of Cape Town: Claremont, Diep River (Rathfelders), Green Point, Mowbray, Plumstead, Papendorp (Woodstock), Wynberg, Montagu Bridge (Maitland) and Robben Island. 4208 cover/bof image1863/64: 1 d. deep brown-red, a block of four with clear to large margins all round, tiny age spot in margin, used on 1865 quadruple rate entire letter from Sir Lowry's Pass Station to Stellenbosch, cancelled by two fine strikes of the CGH obliterator in black. 'Cape Town / Cape Colony' circular datestamp at right (July 1) and reverse with oval framed "SIR LOWRY'S-PASS" despatch in black (June 31, sic) and "STELLENBOSCH" arrival in black. A fine and rare cover, the contents are a monthly report, referring to the hire of a fellow road-worker and stating that over 400 yards of road at the Pass had been recoated that month. A delightful and very rare entire. Note: A 1 d. De La Rue block of four on cover was not present in the Smuts, Stevenson, Dale-Lichtenstein and Indhusophon Grand Prix collections. 4209 cover image1864: 1 d. deep brown-red, a pair and single 1855/63 4 d. blue (Pos. XII 8 B), each with close to large margins all round, used on 1864 cover from Cape Town to Newcastle, Natal paying the 6 d. rate, tied by barred oval numeral "1" cancels on Cape Town in black. "CAPE TOWN / CAPE COLONY" circular datestamp (Dec 17) at right. Carried on the "R.M.S. Anglian" which left Cape Town on 18 December arriving at Algoa Bay on 20 December and Durban on 24 Dec ember. Side flaps missing from the cover and with envelope restored at upper right, however it is interesting to note that this was the sole Triangular Perkins Bacon combination cover in the Dale-Lichtenstein collection.
