4158 imageWoodblock Issue. Due to a stamp shortage caused by a consignment of stamps from London lost at Cape Town Docks, the so-called "Woodblocks", copied from the original Perkins Bacon issue were engraved on steel by C.J. Roberts and printed from stereotyped plates by Saul Solomon & Co., in Cape Town on laid thin white paper. The 1d. value was produced in sheets of 128 or 120 consisting of two panes of 64 or 60 stamps (smaller panes for the April printing), a total of 125'012 were printed. The 4d. value was initially printed in sheets of 24 between the 23 and 26 February, in sheets of 128 during between 9 and 14 March and in sheets of 120 on 12 April. The plate positions noted are taken from the existing arrangement of clichés, formerly exhibited at the South African Cultural History Museum in Cape Town. 1861 (Feb 27): 1 d. vermilion on laid paper, a very fine used example with ample to large margins all round, of lovely fresh colour, lightly cancelled by part CGH triangular obliterator in black.
