4089 cover image1855/63: 4 d. blue on white paper, a single example (Pos. V 6 B), used on 1864 cover to the "Reverend Wm. Holford, Mount Coke, British Kaffaria", tied by CGH obliterator in black. Reverse with slight flap fault and oval framed GRAHAMSTOWN despatch datestamp (March 1) in red. Small closed tear at top but an unsuual destination - Mount Coke was near King Williams Town in the Eastern Cape, where a Methodist Missionary building had been destroyed in the Kaffir Wars in 1839 and was later rebuilt. British Kaffaria was established as a buffer state on 17 December 1847. The area was not annexed by the Cape but was administered as a separate Crown dependency by the Governor of Cape Colony in his capacity of High Commissioner for South Africa, annexation of British Kaffaria eventually took place on 17 April 1866. Southey" in manuscript and reverse showing oval framed GRAAFF REINET despatch datestamp (Aug 28) in red and oval framed COLESBERG arrival datestamp in black (Aug 30). Despite the somewhat grim reading of Mr. Southey's appeal, a fine and unusual usage (Image 1) (Image 2)
