VII 3 B) showing heavy scratches in "NCE" of PENCE; used on 1854 double rate cover from Grahamstown to Braintree, Essex via Cape Town, tied by CGH obliterators in black (8 d. internal postage + 4 d. port fee). Reverse with oval framed GRAHAMSTOWN despatch in red (Dec 28) and endorsed at top "By first vessel" and "P. Paid" at lower left. Carried on private bark "Serenus" arriving at Cape Town (Jan 1) and thence to London (March 2, 1855) with Braintree arrival of the following day and charged "1/4 d." due to pay in manuscript. 4045 piece image1853: 1 d. brick-red on slightly blued paper, a single example with clear to large margins all round, used on large portion of 17 March 1859 "Cape Argus" Newspaper, neatly tied by CGH obliterator in black. Sold together with a digital photograph of the front of the original Newspaper from the South African National Library in Cape Town, detailing the arrival of the mail steamer "R.M.S. Norman" and the private ship "Nipisiquit" from London - the "Norman" arrived at Cape Town on 15 March 1859 and the "Nipisiquit" on the following day. Most attractive and very rare. Endorsed "Registered" at top in manuscript with corresponding "6" in manuscript denoting the registration fee was prepaid in cash; carried from Alice with oval framed despatch (Oct 2) in red, oval framed Cape Town transit (Oct 10) in red and circular datestamp of despatch (Oct 21) by private ship "Earl of Hardwicke" to London (Dec 10) where struck with fine "♚ / REGISTERED" in red. The reverse with further strikes of Perth (Dec 11), Methven (Dec 12), Dunkeld (Dec 14) cds's and undated circular "Logierait" handstamp of arrival. Despite minor imperfections an exceedingly rare and early registered usage. Provenance: R. Reverse CAPE TOWN / CAPE OF GOOD HOPE cds (July 17) in red and carried on "H.M.S. Devastation" of the Royal Navy with Chichester arrival cds (Sept 3) in blue on reverse and charged "1/-" due to pay. The stamps lifted for checking and hinged back into place, a charming cover. Note: The Lindsay Line Shipping contract was signed six days after this cover was delivered. H.M.S. Devastation, a paddle sloop launched in 1841, sailed from Simons Bay on 18 July 1856 under Captain E. Marshall.
