4018 imageThe First Issue. Stamps are frequently differentiated into deeply and slightly blued paper varieties. The blueing was caused by the addition of potassium prussiate (cyanide) into the printing ink or paper to prevent cancellation removal, possible fraud being an obsession with the British Post Office at the time. The printing process involved the dampening of the sheets prior to printing, the wetter sheets becoming more deeply blued than the drier ones. Whilst we follow the catalogue terminology of "paper deeply blued" or "paper slightly blued", it would be more correct to use the term "paper more or less blued", a practice long established by collectors of Great Britain. 1853 (Sept 1): 1 d. deep brick-red on heavily blued paper and clearly showing the "Frame Variety" on reverse (see Stevenson "The Triangular Stamps of the Cape", page 86), the pair with good to large margins all round and lightly cancelled by CGH obliterator in black. Shade classified by the late John Michael. A most attractive pair Gi = £ 1'000. Note: Illustrated in D. Alan Stevenson "The Triangular Stamps of the Cape" on plate 14. Provenance: Collection Eric C. Francis (Image 1) (Image 2)

X 7 B/A), merest hint of bend, a fine pair. Note: Due to an extensive study by MaryAnn Bowman of these Proofs, originally believed to have been produced early in the printing process, it has been proved to show that they wre made after prolonged use and repair to the 4 d. Plate. This was confirmed by the discovery of the 'Fifth Corner' horizontal block of four of these Proofs - this position was thought to exist only in the De La Rue printings (Image 1) (Image 2)

4030 imageThe Cape of Good Hope triangular 4 d. blue was issued concurrently with the Great Britain 2 d. blue using the same inks. The London printing sheets were of 15 horizontal rows of 8 pairs, in each pair there are two slightly differing Types, known as Type A and B. The 4 d. blue has been successfully plated by the late Commander F.W. Collins AIEP of Winchester and his numbering system has been used throughout this sale: horizontal rows are represented by Roman numerals and the Vertical Rows by Arabic numbers. 1853 (Sept): 4 d. deep blue on deeply blued paper, a used pair (Pos. I 6 A/B) with good to large margins all round, lightly cancelled by CGH obliterator in black. Exceptional and most attractive Gi = £ 650+. Provenance: Collection "Cawardine" (Image 1) (Image 2)
